Whalers Win 3 of 4 in Charlotte

Saturday Elite 3-2 WIN

Saturday night the Whalers and Rush met for the 1st time since the season opener.  The opening 20 minutes set the tone for what looked like a high scoring game, as both teams found the net twice.  After that, both teams locked down on defense and the Whalers survived a late game major penalty to force overtime.  The extra session wasn’t enough as the teams would head to a shootout.  Cody Wilson and DJ Randle scored on both Whalers attempts to secure a 3-2 win for the blue and green

Cody Wilson and DJ Randle scored in regulation for the Whalers.  Mark Strazisar notched 2 assists while James Rowe tallied 1 assist.  Ross Jones was a rock in net, making 48 saves on 50 shots.

Charlotte held a 50-25 shot advantage.  Hampton Roads went 1 for 6 on the power play, while the Rush were 0 for 4.

Saturday Premier 5-0 WIN

On Saturday night the Whalers and Rush met for the 1st time since an opening night brawl marred the Whalers season opening win.  The Whalers  premier team scored one each in the 1st and 2nd period and broke the game open with 3 more in the 3rd, cruising to a solid 5-0 shutout win.

Thomas McGuire scored twice for the Whalers, while Conner Hunt, Grant Parrish, and Matthew Hanchon notched 1.  Conner Hunt, Oliver Freden, Brandon Osmundson, Brendan Borg, Joe DiGiulio, Jacob Kaplan, Matthew Hanchon, Chris Ciolek, and John Moncovich each tallied 1 assist.  Alec Lindberg shut down the Rush, making 38 saves for the shutout victory.

The Whalers held a 42-38 shot advantage.  Hampton Roads went 1 for 4 on the power play, while the Rush were 0 for 2.

Sunday Elite 2-1 Loss

On Sunday, the Whalers started slow and struggled to gain much traction throughout the game.  Despite out shooting the Rush in the final 2 frames, Charlotte notched two 2nd period goals and the Whalers weren’t able to dent the twine until the final 5 minutes of regulation as the Whalers 17 game winning streak came to a halt with a 2-1 loss.

DJ Randle scored the lone goal for the Whalers.  Cody Wilson tallied 1 assist.  Ross Jones was a steady again in net, making 38 saves on 40 shots.

Charlotte held a 40-31 shot advantage.  Hampton Roads went 1 for 4 on the power play, while the Rush were 1 for 4.

Sunday Premier 5-2 WIN

On Sunday, the Whalers continued their dominance this season over Charlotte, scoring 2 goals in the 2nd and 3rd periods, to take the 5-2 win and weekend sweep.

Conner Hunt scored twice for the Whalers, while Brandon Osmundson, Matthew Hanchon, and Oliver Freden notched 1.  Oliver Freden notched 2 assists, while Conner Hunt, Brandon Osmundson, Matthew Hanchon, Brandon Leitz, and Thomas McGuire each tallied 1 assist.  Blake Bjella pick up the bounce back victory with 32 saves in net.

The Rush held a 32-29 shot advantage.  Hampton Roads went 1 for 8 on the power play, while the Rush were 0 for 4.

What's on Tap?

The Whalers will get a week of for the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to practice in preparation for returning home for a pair of games December 1st and 2nd against the Potomac Patriots.  Saturday night will be Gerald Owen Memorial Night at the Ponds.  The Whalers Elite (19-3-0) and Premier (21-1-0) teams continue to pace both the southeast division and the entire league as they each sit in 1st overall respectively.
