Saturday Elite 3-1 WIN

#5 James Rowe

Saturday night was a sluggish performance for the Whalers Elite team.  The two teams played to a scoreless opening period despite a 17-7 advantage in shots for the Whalers, not many quality chances presented themselves.  In the second period, the Patriots got on the scoresheet first with just 7:19 to go in the frame to take a 1-0 lead.  Things would stay that way until just 1:25 left in the period when the Whalers popped in a rebound out front to get on the board.  Just :58 seconds later the Whalers would score again and take a 2-1 lead into the final period.  In the 3rd period, the two teams would combine for just 13 shots, and the Whalers found themselves shorthanded for almost half the period.  The penalty kill would hold serve for the Whalers and with just 4:39 left the Whalers found their insurance goal and finished off a 3-1 win.

Nolan Cavanagh, Gary Eastlack, and Adam Campbell scored for the Whalers.  Tianyou Zuo, Jacob Bennet, and Gary Eastlack each tallied one assist, while captain Ryan Lorenz posted 2 helpers.  Everett Yasinski picked up the win in net with a 24 save effort.

The Whalers went 0 for 3 on the power play while the Patriots were 0 for 8.  The Whalers finished with  36-25 advantage in shots.

Saturday Premier 7-1 WIN

#19 Zach Zalar

On Saturday night the Whalers Premier team put forth a complete team effort and put on a clinic against the visiting Potomac Patriots.  The Whalers opened the game firing 24 shots on net in the 1st period and striking twice to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.  In the middle frame, the Whalers fired another 24 shots on goal, but it was Potomac who capitalized on a turnover to cut the lead to 2-1 5 minutes into the frame on just the 6th shot of the game.  The Patriots momentum was short lived, as the Whalers fired 3 more goals home in the period to take a 5-1 lead into the 3rd period.  In the final frame, the Whalers continued their offensive assault, with another 22 shots on net, the Whalers scored two more to take a 7-1 win.  If not for the play of Patriots goalie Elvinas Karla, the score could have been much higher, as he made many highlight reel saves and stood on his head.

Zach Zalar posted his first career hat-trick, Nikita Anistratenko had 2 goals, while Joe DiGiulio and Kirill Romanov each tallied one goal.  Brandon Osmundson posted 3 assists to become the Whalers all time points leader at the Premier level, passing Whalers alum TJ Sneath.  Adam Toor also posted a trio of assists, while Conner Hunt, Jared Sanchez, and John Moncovich posted 2 assists, Brandon Leitz and Joe DiGiulio each had 1.  Sean Dickson made 16 saves in net to snap his 4 game winless skid.

The Whalers held a 70-17 shot on goal advantage.  The Whalers finished 1 for 5 on the power play while the Patriots were 0 for 3.

Sunday Elite 7-0 WIN

#31 Michael Chmiel

On Sunday, the Whalers Elite team started fast and finished strong in a much more complete game.  The Whalers scored 4 goals in the opening period in a span of just over 5 minutes to take control of the game.  In the 2nd period had a 16-5 advantage in shots but were unable to up their lead.  In the final frame, the Whalers made it 5-0 just under a minute into the frame and added two more late to cruise to a 7-0 win.

Seven different Whalers found the back of the net as Gary Eastlack, Jacob Bennett, Ty Brandt, Kyle Ball, Caelan Bolanowski, Bryce Leger, and Jacob Kaplan each netted a goal.  Justin Jiang, Bryce Leger, and Ty Brandt posted 2 assist games, while Jacob Kaplan, Gary Eastlack, Jacob Bennett, Caelan Bolanowski, Michael Volmert, Ryan Lorenz, and Nolan Cavanagh each had 1.  Michael Chmiel mad 21 saves for his 2nd win of the season in net and his 1st career junior shutout.

The Whalers held a 47-21 advantage in shots.  The Whalers did not have a power play while the Patriots were 0 for 4.  Gary Eastlack was ejected from the game for the Whalers.

The Whalers opened up a 7 point lead on 3rd place Richmond and 8 points on 4th place Carolina for the 2nd seed in the Elite Southeastern division playoff race.  The Whalers need just one point in the last 4 games to lock in the 2nd seed.  The Whalers will face either Richmond or Carolina in round 1, while the other will face #1 seed Charlotte in a best of 3 series for a birth to the finals in Boston.

Sunday Premier 7-2 WIN

#7 Adam Toor

On Sunday, the Whalers Premier team continued their offense onslaught.  Despite a 21-6 advantage in shots in the opening period, it was Potomac who struck first and took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.  In the middle frame, the Whalers offense caught fire and score 4 times in the period to take a 4-1 lead.  The Patriots refused to go away, as they would pop a late goal at with just 41 seconds left in the period to make it 4-2.  In the 3rd period, struck 3 times in the opening 10 minutes of the period and cruised to a 7-2 win and critical weekend sweep.

Seven different Whalers found the scoresheet as Max Loga, Kirill Romanov, Zach Zalar, Tianyou Zuo, John Moncovich, Adam Toor, and Joe DiGiulio each potted one goal.  Adam Toor and Jared Sanchez ead tallied 2 assists, while Brandon Leitz, Nikita Anistratenko, John Moncovich, John Horn, Hayden Knight, Brandon Osmundson, Conner Hunt, and Max Loga each had 1.  Alec Lindberg picked up his 5th straight win of the season in net with 19 saves.

The Whalers held a 59-21 advantage in shots.  The Whalers went 3 for 4 on the power play while Potomac was 0 for 2.

The Whalers overcame a 2 point deficit before the weekend to open up a 2 point cushion on the 2nd seed over Carolina in the USPHL Premier Southeastern division playoffs.  Carolina was swept at home by Charlotte.  With 4 games remaining, this weekend’s matchup with Carolina will go a long way towards determining the 2nd and 3rd seed for round 1.  Richmond cannot catch either team, and opened up a 5 point lead on the 4th and final seed over Atlanta with a sweep of the Knights in Atlanta this past weekend.  Richmond needs just 3 points to lock in the 4th seed and face #1 Charlotte in round 1.
