#12 John Moncovich

“John’s success is attributed to his persistence and determination to become the player he is today”, stated Whalers GM Patrick Cavanagh. “His talent to score goals and to find a way to win sets him apart from his peers. He will be successful as a Utica Pioneer under Coach Heenan. This is a tremendous accomplishment, I am proud of him, he is a world class Hampton Roads Whaler.”

The Hampton Roads Jr. Whalers are proud to announce that 1998 forward John Moncovich from Wilmington, NC has committed to playing NCAA hockey next season for the Utica College Pioneers after a strong showing this past weekend at the USPHL Chicago Showcase.

The 6’2, 180lbs veteran forward has posted 5 goals in 4 games this season following a year in which he posted 60 goals and 96 points in 56 games last season en route to the USPHL finals.  In 4 seasons with the Green and Blue, Moncovich has posted 123 goals and 88 assists for 211 points in 136 career games.  He led the legaue in goals each of the past 2 seasons, (60 Elite 2016-17) and (52 USP3 2015-16) while being named a USPHL all-star each season.  In 2015-16, Moncovich was named the USP3 Forward of the Year.

“Utica is excited to welcome "Monc" to the Pioneer Family”, stated UC Head Coach Gary Heenan.  “John has proven his ability to score and his size and character are certainly well above the norm. We are confident he'll continue to score big goals for UC in the future.”

"John is a great example of a true goal scorer", stated Head Coach Rod Taylor.  "His shot is very accurate, he seems to be able to find that little opening to put the puck in the net just when you need it most.  He has a knack of knowing how to read the goalies to further his scoring ability.  Just the player you put on the Ice when you need that big goal.  He has a positive attitude and a desire to continue to improve his game.  I wish John the best and I look forward to seeing him score a lot of goals for the Utica Pioneers."

"The past 3 years in Hampton Roads have been the best 3 years of my life”, stated Moncovich. “The organization here is first class and really develops and promotes its players. Coaches Rod Taylor, Brad Jones, and Kody Rodriguez work just as hard as the players to help get the most out of players every day. Mr. Cavanagh runs a great organization and cares about every single guy on the team. I couldn't have received this commitment to Utica College without those four gentlemen. I can't say anything but great things about the organization and I'm proud to call Hampton Roads home. My billets, the Osmundson’s, have gone beyond expectations in welcoming me to their home and inviting me into their family.”

Utica College is located in Utica, NY and competes in the NCAA United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC).

Moncovich becomes the Whalers 2nd commit of the 2017-18 season joining Sean Dickson (Utica). He will join former Whalers Alex Brissette, Jacob Gerson, and Vaden McManus as Utica commits.
