The Hampton Roads Junior Whalers are proud to announce that Alumni forward Regen Cavanagh has made an NCAA Division 1 commitment to Bentley University.

The 6’0, 180lbs forward just completed his 1st season in the USHL between the Dubuque Fighting Saints and Sioux Falls Stampede, tallying 22 points in 55 games.  Cavanagh grew up a product of the Hampton Roads Whalers, playing and training exclusively with the Whalers youth and junior teams until the 2015-2016 season when he was drafted by and played for the Corpus Christi Icerays in the NAHL.  In 4 seasons with the Whalers junior program from 2011-12 through 2014-2015, Cavanagh posted 109 points in 126 games on 37 goals and 72 assists.

“I want to congratulate Regen on his great accomplishment of committing to Bentley”, stated Premier head coach Rod Taylor.  “I feel privileged that I have had the opportunity to coach him along his journey.  He has a great skill set, combined with speed, passing, and scoring.  He has a strong work ethic and is an overall well rounded player.  Regen will definitely be an asset to the hockey program at Bentley”.

“This is a tremendous honor for Regen and benchmark moment for the Whalers organization”, stated Whalers Executive Director Brad Jones.  “This opportunity continues to pave the way for players from Hampton Roads.  As a homegrown product, Regen represents the vision of Whaler Nation, and now he will showcase those efforts at the NCAA D1 level.  It represents an opportunity to the Hampton Roads hockey community and should inspire the success of those who follow".

"I had the opportunity to play my last year of juniors with Regen", stated former teammate and Whalers assistant coach Kody Rodriguez. "He was a younger guy but showed me the Whaler way and what was expected of me in Hampton Roads. He is a great example of what hard work and dedication can do. His leadership on and off the ice made an immediate impact. I am very excited to see what the future has in store for him".

Bentley University is located in Waltham, MA and competes in the NCAA Division 1 Atlantic Hockey Conference (AHC).

Cavanagh becomes the 4th Whalers Alum to commit NCAA D1 and joins 10 other Whalers to advance their careers this season, joining Vaden McManus (Utica College), Liam Walsh (Stevenson University), Brendon Zack (Buffalo State), Travis Volmert (Bryn Athyn), Seamus O'Kane (King's College), Cole Helgemo (Oakland University), Jonah Lainesse (Oakland University), Billy Brock (University of Michigan Dearborn), Brandon Osmundson (Corpus Christi NAHL), and John Moncovich (Corpus Christi NAHL).
