Hampton Roads Whalers Commits Gear Up for Upcoming Season

As Whaler Nation gears up for another season of Whalers hockey, our 2016-17 commitments look forward to their next step.  Lets take a look at the list of Whalers advancements from this past season and how they got there!!!

College Commitments


#7 Seamus O'Kane

Seamus O'Kane (Kings College)- The 6’2, 185lbs veteran defenseman has tallied 36 points in 86 career games over two years for the Whalers Elite team on 3 goals and 33 assists, helping lead the Elite team to the 2015-16 USPHL Elite championship.


#27 Vaden McManus

Vaden McManus (Utica College)- The 5’10, 170lbs veteran defenseman tallied 46 points in 52 games on 11 goals and 35 assists this season for the Whalers, including 6 power play goals, 12 power play assists and 74 penalty minutes, good for 8th on the team and 2nd among defenseman in scoring.


#6 Brendan Zack

Brendan Zack (Buffalo State)- In 2 seasons with the Whalers, Zack has tallied 83 points in 91 career games on 25 goals and 58 assists, including 10 power play goals, 19 power play assists, 1 shorthanded goal, 6 game winning goals, and 64 penalty minutes.

Liam Walsh (Stevenson University)- Walsh, a 5'11, 180lbs forward joined the Whalers in the back half of last season at the trade deadline, adding some scoring punch to the line-up.  In 20 games, the Stevenson University commit posted 26 points on 11 goals and 15 assists with 3 power play goals, 3 power play assists, 1 short handed goal, and 1 game winning goal.


#2 Travis Volmert

Travis Volmert (Bryn Athyn College)- The 6’2, 190lbs veteran defenseman has tallied 25 points in 53 games on 6 goals and 19 assists this season for the Whalers, including 4 power play goals and 5 power play assists good for 3rd among defenseman in scoring.  In 4 seasons with the Whalers, Volmert has tallied 60 points in 166 career games on 9 goals and 51 assists along with 70 penalty minutes. Volmert was instrumental in helping lead the Whalers to the 2015-16 USPHL Elite championship.


#10 Jonah Lainesse

Jonah Lainesse (Oakland University)- The 6’0, 215lbs veteran defenseman tallied 27 points in 48 games this season between the Whalers USP3 and Elite team on 6 goals and 21 assists, while also serving as assistant captain on the USP3 team.


#8 Billy Brock

Billy Brock (University of Michigan Dearborn)- In 2 seasons with the Whalers, Brock has tallied 120 points in 93 career games on 51 goals and 69 assists, including 10 power play goals, 11 power play assists, 3 shorthanded goal, 12 game winning goals while helping lead the Whalers to the 2015-16 USPHL Championship.


#20 Cole Helgemo

Cole Helgemo (Oakland University)- The 5’11, 190lbs veteran defenseman has tallied 43 points in 82 games over two years with the Whalers on 16 goals and 27 assists, helping lead the Elite team to the 2015-16 USPHL Elite championship.

#21 Brandon Osmundson


#12 John Moncovich


#24 Nolan Cavanagh

After a stellar season in the Blue and Green, posting 113 and 96 points respectively, Brandon Osmundson (1998, Chesapeake, VA) and John Moncovich (1998, Wilmington, NC) earned tenders with the Corpus Christi Icerays for the 2017-18 season.  At main camp in Fraser, MI last weekend, Osmundson and Moncovich continued to shine, as both will be joining the Icerays in the coastal bend at the end of August.

Across the NAHL’s Southern Conference, the Odessa Jackalopes hosted their main camp in Geneva, IL last weekend.  After a strong showing as a main camp invite, Whalers forward Nolan Cavanagh (2000, Chesapeake, VA) has earned the invitation to join the Jackalopes in Odessa at the end of August.
