The Hampton Roads Jr. Whalers are proud to announce that 1997 forward Cole Helgemo (Commerce Township, MI) has committed to Oakland University’s ACHA D1 team for the 2017-18 season.

The 5’11, 190lbs veteran defenseman has tallied 43 points in 82 games over two years between the Whalers USP3 and Elite team on 16 goals and 27 assists, helping lead the Elite team to the 2015-16 USPHL Elite championship.

“I am beyond excited to be continuing my hockey career while getting my education at Oakland University”, stated Helgemo.  “I'd like to thank everyone in Hampton Roads for providing me with everything I needed on and off the ice to advance my career and play to the next level.”

“I am excited to see Cole’s hard work, dedication, and perseverance pay off”, stated Whalers coach Brad Jones.  “Cole has really worked hard at refining his game over the last 2 years and he will be a great addition for coach Ronayne and the Grizzles.”

Oakland University is located in Rochester, MI and competes in the ACHA’s GLCHL Conference.  The Grizzles were the 2007 ACHA D1 National Champions along with the 2004 and 2006 ACHA D2 National Champions.

Helgemo becomes the 7th Whaler to advance his career this season, joining Vaden McManus (Utica College), Liam Walsh (Stevenson University), Brendon Zack (Buffalo State), Travis Volmert (Bryn Athyn), Brandon Osmundson (Corpus Christi NAHL), and John Moncovich (Corpus Christi NAHL). The Whalers look forward to announcing more commitments in the coming weeks.
