The Hampton Roads Whalers MET South team continued their second half assalt this past weekend at the Chilled Ponds. This time around it was the Space Coast Hurricanes who fell victim to the streaking Whalers. The Whalers scored four 1st period goals and managed to hold off a late Hurricanes surge for a 4-3 victory. Kellan Lessard got the Whalers going early with two unassisted goals at the 0:32 second mark and at 6:42. Then it was defenseman Chris Miracle converting on a pass from Casey Moneer and Jamie Lasher at 17:11. Marc Adams finished the scoring when he tipped home a Rick Loveless point shot at 17:49, Chris Miracle also picked up a helper on the goal. Dylan Synder picked up the win in net with 25 saves including a save on Hurricanes leading goal scorer Clayton Whittemore on a penalty shot with only :42 seconds remaining.
In the second game of the weekend it was the Whalers battling from behind. After falling behind 2-0 only :34 seconds into the 2nd period Kellan Lessard ripped a slap shot home at 7:53 to put the Whalers on the board. Assists went to Cody Pessig and Chris Radague. With only :30 seconds remaining in the 2nd period Chris Radague tied the game 2-2 from Cody Pessig and Rick Loveless. The Whalers took the lead 3-2 in the 3rd period at the 6:10 mark when Mat Culcasi put the puck in top shelf short side with assists going to Chris Radague and Cody Pessig. Cody Pessig gave the Whalers a 4-2 lead when Pessig burried a pass from Mat Culcasi and Chris Radague at 16:51. The Hurricanes added a goal late with only 1:51 to play but the Whalers held on for another 4-3 win and a weekend sweep. Dylan Synder picked up the win in goal again, this time he finished with 22 saves.
Next Up: The Whalers take to the road for a four game road trip with a pair of games against the Hurricanes then another pair of games against the Palm Beach Hawks. The Whalers have taken 13 out of 14 possible points in the last 7 games. With 2 games in hand the Whalers have a chance to leap frog the Tampa Bay Juniors into 4th place this weekend.
