Whalers Pee Wee AA Silver Stick Finals Recap

Team has a good showing

       The Whalers Pee Wee AA Team went up against the top teams from the USA and Canda in the Silver Sticks Finals which was held in Port Huron, Michigain. They finished with a respectable 1-2 record in their bracket.

       On Thursday, January 27 the Whalers took on the Dallas Penguins ranked 30th in the USA. This game was a fast pace game from the start with Dallas putting the pressure on from the drop of the puck. Dallas opened the scoring at the 3:55 mark in the 1st period to make it 1-0. The Whalers would have their chances but could not convert and the period would end 1-0 Dallas. In the 2nd period , Dallas found the back of the net twice, once at the 5:44 mark and once at the 10:50 mark to make it 3-0 Penguins. The Whalers would get things going in the 3rd. Just 44 seconds into the 3rd, Austin Webb found the back of the net on a saucer pass from Brandon Osmundson (assist) to cut the Dallas lead to 3-1. The 3rd assist on the play goes out to John Hawley who started the play. The Penguins were too much to handle on this day as they would score at the 5:26 mark and again at the 7:51 mark to end the game 5-1 Dallas. The Whalers were out shot 27-9 for the game.

       On Friday, January 28th the Whalers faced off against the Whitby Wildcats ranked 14th in Ontario, Canada. This would be a test of all tests for this young Whaler team. Whitby scored in the 1st period at the 3:45 mark to make it 1-0 Wildcats. The Whalers answered back at the 10:58 mark on a goal by Brenden McQueeney (assist) Brandon Osmundson and Adam Campbell. Less than a minute later Brenden McQueeney would get his 2nd goal of the game on a one timer from Brandon Osmundson to make it 2-1 Whalers. The 1st period would end 2-1 Whalers. In the 2nd period the Whalers scored on a power play at the 9:48 mark to go up 3-1 Whalers. Brenden McQueeney would get his 3rd goal of the night for his 1st Hat trick in Silver Sticks competition (assist) Adam Campbell. Two minutes later, Whitby would score to cut the lead to one. The period would end 3-2 Whalers. In the 3rd period the Wildcats tied things up at the 2:56 mark at 3-3. With less than two minutes to go in the the game Whitby scored the go ahead goal to make it 4-3 Wildcats. The Whitby Wildcats would win the game 4-3. The Wildcats were happy to win, but also knew they had been in a dog fight of a game. As the players went off the ice, the two captains from the Wildcats stayed behind to shake all the Whalers hands as they left the ice. What a game.

      On Saturday, January 29th the Whalers faced the Port Huron Flags. The Flags scored just 26 seconds into the game to make it 1-0. They would get their second goal of the period at the 8:06 mark to go up 2-0 on the Whale. The Whalers answered back on a goal from Austin Webb (assist) Cody Wilson to cut the lead to 2-1. Then with 5 minutes remaining in the period Cody Wilson found the back of the net (assist) Hunter Smith, Jimmy Zinter to tie the game 2-2. At the start of the 2nd period Brenden McQueeney scored (assist) Brandon Osmundson, Carter Long to take the lead 3-2 Whalers. Three minutes later Brandon Osmundson scored (assist) Sam DiBerardinis, Brenden McQueeney to make it 4-2. The second period would end with the Whalers on top 4-2. There was no scoring in the 3rd until two minutes remaining in the game as the Flags cut the lead to 4-3. With a 1:27 to go in the game and the Flags goalie pulled, Brandon Osmundson scored his 2nd goal of the game on a empty net (assist) Adam Campbell, Jimmy Zinter to seal the game for the Whalers 5-3. The Whalers finished the tournament 1-2. The Whalers left Port Huron with a lot of pride and confidence knowing that they had just finished competing with the top teams in Canada and the USA.

      Now the Whalers set their sites on making the playoffs in the CBHL. Next stop is back at home against the Frederick Fury on Saturday and Sunday, February 5th/6th. Puck drop Saturday at 2:50pm and then Sunaday at 8:20am.
