Battling the injury bug....

Game 1 vs. Metro Maple Leafs

The Hampton Roads Whalers Bantam AA team has been bitten hard by the injury bug of late.  Heading into this weekend they were already short two players.  Captain Derek Palandro is out with a seperated shoulder and defenseman Nick Mueller is out with a leg injury.  Halfway into the first period of Saturday's game against Metro they lost forward Jonathon Darrow for 5-6 weeks with a broken collarbone.  With 3 teamates down, the boys dug in deep to pick up a 3-0 shutout victory over the Leafs.  With 2:29 remaining in the 1st period Regen Cavanagh deflected in a point shot from Ryan Ziemann to put the Whalers up 1-0.  Daniel Gross also picked up an assist.  In the 2nd period Dylan Harris extended the Whalers lead to 2-0 on the power play at 7:55 when he banged home a shot from Zach McDaniel and Ryan Ziemann.  In the 3rd Cavanagh added his second goal of the game unassisted at 9:06 to seal the 3-0 victory.  Zach Alvarado stood tall in goal stopping all 16 Maple Leafs shots for his 2nd shut out the the season, both against Metro.

Game 2 vs. Montgomery Blue Devils

In the second game of the weekend the Whalers were out for some revenge after being swept last weekend by the Blue Devils.  In a game filled with penalties the boys came up short in a hard fought game by a score of 3-2.  After a scoreless 1st period the Whalers jumped on the board first in the 2nd at 5:52 when Regen Cavanagh converted on his own rebounded in front of the Blue Devils net to make 1-0.  The lead wouldn't last long as Montgomery would bang home a rebound in front :52 seconds later to tie it 1-1.  Just :13 seconds into the 3rd period the Whalers broke down on the power play after a bad turnover and Montgomery connected with a short handed goal to make it 2-1.  The game would remain that wat until late in the 3rd when Montgomery connected with 3:08 to play to make it 3-1.  With a late powerplay and the goaltender pulled the Whalers would pull back within one with 1:37 to play when Cavanagh connected on his second of the game from Ryan Ziemann.  That was all the offense the Whalers could muster as they suffered the tough 3-2 loss. Jack Herrick was strong in goal, giving his team a chance to win with 28 saves.

Next Up: The Whalers wrap up CBHL league play this weekend with a 2 game set against the Reston Raiders at the Chilled Ponds.  The Whalers will then have a few weeks off to get healthy before heading to Johnstown, PA for a tournament President's Day weekend.
