Whalers Take 5 of 6 Points in MET South Showcase

Prepare for weekend set against the East Coast Eagles

Game 1 vs. Space Coast Hurricanes

The Hampton Roads Whalers MET South team traveled to the Extreme Ice Center in Indian Trail, NC for the MET South Showcase.  This was a crucial 3 game weekend for the Whalers as the cling to the 6th and final playoff spot in the South Division.  Coach Winkler's team, getting back forward's Lee Jenkins and Kellan lessard were ready to go to battle.  Game one of the weekend brought on the Space Coast Hurricanes (7-18-1-0 18 pts) who sit right behind the Whalers in the 7th position.  The Hurricanes struck first at 4:14 in the 1st with a power play goal. The Whalers tied it up at the 14:06 on the power play when Dylan Woods burried the puck from Casey Moneer.   In the 2nd half of the contest the Whalers struck early to take a 3-1 lead.  At 2:14 again in the PP it was Chris Miracle scoring from Cody Pessig and Chris Radague.  Then 18 seconds later Radague burried the puck from Tyler Allen.  At the 20:06 mark the Hurricanes would draw within one but the Whalers struck again at 21:25 on the PP when Mat Culcasi scored from Radague and John Davies to regain the 2 goal lead.  Culcasi iced the game with 4 seconds left from Rick Loveless and Radague to seal the 5-2 win.  Dylan Synder shut the door on the Hurricanes and picked up the win in net with 30 saves.

Game 2 vs Florida Jr. Blades

Game two of the weekend brought on the streaking Jr. Blades who are sitting in 3rd place in the South Division with a 19-7-0-2 record good for 40 points.  The Blades jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 1st with a James Williams PP goal.  At the 19;48 mark Casey Moneer brought the Whalers to 1-1 when he converted from Jamie Lasher and Chris Miracle.  Less than a minute later at 20:13 Kellan Lessard converted a rebound on the PP from Dylan Woods to give the Whalers a 2-1 lead heading into the intermission.  The Whalers would cling to the lead into the final 5 minutes of the 2nd half before Mark Woinicki tied it up at 2-2 at 21:03 from Oleg Kuzmin.  Just 1:43 into Overtime James Hyatt would give the Jr. Blades the 3-2 victory as he beat Whalers goaltender Justin Lindgren.  Lindgren was stellar in goal and gave his team a chance to win with 42 saves.

Game 3 vs, Florida Eels

Game 3 of the weekend brought on the Florida Eels who sit in the basement of the South Division with a 5-23-0-1 record.  After a scoreless 1st half the Whalers dominated the 2nd en route to a 3-0 win outshooting the Eels 38-20 in the process.  Dylan Woods made it 1-0 at 6:48 from Euard Smirnov.  Then Chirs Radague made it 2-0 at 16:22 from Cody Pessig and Mat Culcasi.  Kellan lessard wrapped up the scoring for the Whalers at 18:48 from Lee Jenkins to seal the 3-0 win.  Dylan Snyder made 20 saves in net for win and shutout.  A very successful weekend with some much needed points as they finish 2-0-0-1 with 5 of 6 possible points.

Next Up

The Whalers (10-16-0-1 21 pts), 6th place in the MET southern division, travel to NC to take on the East Coast Eagles at the Factory Ice House Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 10:30am.  This will be another crucial weekend for the Whalers as the Eagles sit just ahead of them in the standings in 5th with a 10-19-0-2 record for 22 points.  Trailing the Eagles by only one point with 4 games in hand the Whalers will be looking for 2 wins to climb back into the 5th position and cushion themselves for a playoff run.
