Saturday USP3 3-1 Loss

Despite a strong defensive effort, the Whalers offense couldn’t solve Richmond’s Jordan Gilbert, while the Richmond offense was opportunistic, tying the game on a fluke goal late in the 2nd period and scoring the winner with less than 3 minutes to play in a 3-1 loss.

Gary Eastlack scored the lone goal for the Whalers, Max Loga picked up the assist.  Everett Yasinski made 22 saves in a losing effort.

Richmond held a 25-24 shot advantage.  The Whalers went 0 for 3 on the power play while the Generals went 1 for 3.

Cole Helgemo and Nolan Cavanagh served the 2nd of their 2 game suspensions for their part in last weekend’s brawl against Richmond.

Saturday Elite 4-2 WIN

The Whalers and Generals squared off for the 3rd of 4 straight on Saturday and a two goal second period helped the Whalers Elite team to a 4-2 victory over the Richmond Generals.

Trent Wydrowski scored his 1st of the season, Conner Hunt picked up his 2nd goal as a Whaler, and Andriy Denyskin notched a pair of goals to propel the Whalers offense.  Denyskin had one assist along with John Moncovich, Jonah Lainesse, Conner Hunt, Brandon Osmundson, and Liam Walsh.  Alec Lindberg drew the start in net and picked up his 3rd win for the Whalers with 25 saves.

The Whalers outshot Richmond 36-27.  Hampton Roads finished 1 for 6 on the power play while the Generals went 0 for 4.

Sunday USP3 4-3 OT Loss

Game two of the weekend was a tough pill to swallow.  The Whalers dominated the Generals, outshooting them 2 to 1, but again, Jordan Gilbert was the difference, making several key saves, as the Whalers fell 4-3 in overtime, giving the Generals a 6 point lead on 4th seed and last home ice playoff slot with 4 games remaining for each club.

Tyler Dienna scored a pair of goals, while Max Loga added 1.  Robert Brown notched a pair of assist, while Tanner Davis, Cole Helgemo, and Ryan Lorenz each had 1.  Steve McGuire suffered the loss on net with 15 saves on 19 shots.

The Whalers held a 41-19 edge in shots.  Hampton Roads went 1 for 8 on the power play while the Generals were 1 for 5.

Sunday Elite 5-4 OT WIN

Game 2 of the weekend started extremely slow for the Whalers, as they fell behind 3-0 mid way through the 2nd period before the boys woke up, scoring 3 late middle frame goals before taking the weekend sweep with an overtime victory.

Forward Billy Brock scored twice, Travis Volmert notched a power play goal, Liam Walsh scored his 1st as a Whaler, and Brandon Osmundson was the overtime hero with a backhand, top shelf snipe.  Osmundson increased his league leading points total with 3 assists, John Moncovich had 2, while Liam Walsh, Trent Wydrowski, and John Horn each had 1.  Sean Dickson picked up his 20th win of the season in net with 38 saves.

Richmond held a 42-36 shot on goal advantage.  Hampton Roads went 2 for 4 on the power play while the Generals went 2 for 6.

Playoff Picture

The Whalers Elite team has clinched home ice for rounds 1 and 2 of the USPHL playoffs.  If the season ended today the Whalers would be the #2 seed and face the #7 seed Atlanta Knights.  Atlanta is in a tight battle with Richmond for the #6 seed, currently held by Richmond by 1 point.  The Whalers have 2 games in hand and a 4 point deficit to the #1 Charlotte Rush.  If the Whalers sweep the weekend against Potomac and tie Charlotte in points, the Whalers face Charlotte next weekend with the top seed on the line.  Palm Beach currently occupies the #8 seed and will face the #1 seed in round 1.

If the season ended today, the Whalers USP3 team would travel to the #3 Carolina Eagles for round 1 of the best of three 1st round series.  With 2 games in hand, and 3 points behind #5 Atlanta, the Whalers have a shot at the 5th seed, which would send them to Richmond for round 1.  The Florida Jr. Blades have clinched the #1 seed while Charlotte occupies the #2 seed.
