Whalers Elite Sweeps Atlanta, USP3 Takes 2 of 3

Saturday 2-1 WIN

The Whalers and Knights renewed their rivalry this weekend in what has been a series of 1 goal decisions in the 1st 4 games this year, and Saturday morning was no different as the Whalers escaped with a 2-1 OT win.  

Matthieu Doucet scored just 2 minutes in to the game, Atlanta tied it up mid-way through the 2nd half and Max Loga blasted home the overtime winner.  Nolan Cavanagh, Charles DuBose, and Matthew Hanchon each notched an assist.  Everett Yasinski scored the win in net, his 10th of the season, with 18 saves.

The Whalers held a 30-19 shot advantage.  The Whalers finished 1 for 4 on the power play while Atlanta was 0 for 1.

Saturday 2-0 WIN

Game 2 continued on the same path, as the pace and chippy play picked up.  Two late tallies for the Whalers sealed the deal in a 2-0 shutout win.

Mathieu Doucet and Matthew Hanchon scored goals for the Whalers.  Gary Eastlack, Cody Wilson, Adam Campbell, and Ryan Lorenz tallied assists.  Steve McGuire picked up his 2nd win as a Whalers and his 1st shutout with a stellar 16 save performance.

The Whalers held a 18-16 shot on goal advantage.  The Whalers went 1 for 3 on the power play, the Knights went 0 for 3.

Sunday 4-2 Loss

In the final game of the weekend it look as though the Whalers were in good shape with a 2-1 lead in the 3rd, but costly turnovers lead to 3 unanswered Knights goals as the Whalers 6 game winning streak was snapped by the Knights 4-2.

Noah Kramer and Max Loga scored goals for the Whalers.  Charles DuBose, Adam Campbell, and Matthew Hanchon picked up assists.  Steve McGuire took the loss in goal with 21 saves on 25 shots.

The Whalers held a 30-25 advantage in shots.  Hampton Roads went 1 for 6 on the power play, Atlanta was 1 for 4.

Elite

Saturday 10-1 WIN

The Whalers Elite team had 20 days to stew over their weekend sweep at the hands of the Charlotte Rush and on Saturday night they took that frustration out on the Atlanta Knights with a big 10-1 win.

John Moncovich had a hat-trick, Billy Brock and Roman Gaudet each scored twice, while Colton Seeman, Nick Richards, and  Brendon Zack each scored once.  Brock and Gaudet also notched 4 assists apiece, while Brendon Zack had 3,  Brandon Osmundson and Seamus O'Kane had 2, and Travis Volmert, Colton Seeman, Tinayou Zuo, and Vaden McManus had 1.  Sean Dickson got the win in net with 22 saves.

The Whalers held a 35-23 shot advantage.  Hampton Roads went 1 for 2 on the power play while Atlanta was 0 for 1.

Trent Wydrowski (ill), John Horn (ill), Andriy Denyskin (world juniors) and Cole Helgemo (susp.) missed the game.

Sunday 6-3 WIN

Game 2 on Sunday started off rough for the Whalers, trailing 2-0 after 20, but a 3 goal 2nd and 3 goal 3rd propelled the Whalers to a 6-3 win and weekend sweep.

John Moncovich and Roman Gaudet each scored twice while Billy Brock and Vaden McManus tallied once.  Brandon Osmundson notched 2 assists, Zach Zalar and Billy Brock had 2, while Brendan Zack, Nick Richards, Colton Seeman, Roman Gaudet, and Conner Hunt each had 1. Sean Dickson picked up the win in net with 14 saves.

The Whalers held a 41-17 shot advantage.  Hampton Roads went 1 for 7 on the power play while Atlanta was 0 for 3.

Trent Wydrowski (ill), John Horn (ill), and Andriy Denyskin (world juniors) missed the game.

The Whalers will board the plane Wednesday afternoon and head to swamp in Estero, FL, home of the Florida Jr. Blades, for the USPHL South Florida Blades showcase at Germain Arena, home to the Florida Everblades ECHL team.

News and Notes

The Whalers traded 1996 forward David Min (Bellevue, WA) to the Jersey Hitmen. In a corresponding move, the Whalers have acquired 1997 forward Geoff George (Harleysville, PA). George comes to the Whalers from the Elliot Lake Wildcats of the NOJHL.

The Whalers have traded 1998 goaltender Nathan Cleghorn (Fitchburg, WI) to the Daytona Racers USP3. In a corresponding move, the Whalers have acquired 1998 goaltender Alec Lindberg (Bedford, NH). Lindberg joins the Whalers from the Valley Wildcats in the Maritime Hockey League (MHL).

Whalers forward Andriy Denyskin tallied 2 assists for Team Ukraine in a 4-2 loss to Team Poland in the opening game of the IIHF U20 World Championships. Denyskin also picked up the player of the game award for Team Ukraine.

After a 6 game absence, Elite forward Billy Brock came back into the line-up with vengance, picking up 9 points in 2 games on 3 goals and 6 assists.

Elite goalie Sean Dickson leads the league in wins with 16.

USP3 goalie Everett Yasinski moved to 4th in the league in wins with 10.
