Whalers Complete 4 Game Sweep at Potomac Over Patriots

Saturday Elite 19-1 WIN


#13 Roman Gaudet

The Whalers dynamic offense had no problems finding the back of the net Saturday night in Potomac, scoring a season high 19 goals in a 19-1 drubbing of the Patriots.

Forward Roman Gaudet set a Tier 3 junior hockey high for this season for points in a single game with 9 points on 5 goals and 4 assists.  Billy Brock had 3 goals and 3 assists, Brendon Zack and John Moncovich each had 1 goal and 4 assists.  Cole Helgemo tallied 4 points on a goal and 3 assists.  David Min and Colton Seeman had 2 goals and 1 assist, while Brandon Osmundson had 1 goal and 1 assist, Nick Richards and John Horn had 2 helpers.  Travis Volmert, Zach Zalar, and Vaden McManus each notched 1 goal and Seamus O’Kane potted 1 assist.  Zach Alvarado took the win in goal with 23 saves.

The Whalers held a 72-24 shot on goal advantage.  Hampton Roads went 3 for 3 on the power play while Potomac went 0 for 5.

Zach Zalar was ejected for the Whalers.

Saturday USP3 3-1 WIN


#12 Matthew Hanchon

Potomac netminder Zack Richards did his best to thwart the Whalers on Saturday night, turning aside 52 Whalers shots and keeping the Patriots close.  It took the Whalers half the game and 34 shots to finally dent the twine and escape with a 3-1 on Saturday night.

Noah Kramer, Jonah Lainesse, and Max Loga each scored once for the Whalers.  Cody Wilson tallied 2 assists while Jonah Lainesse had 1.  Jason Horn picked up his 1st win of his junior career in net with 14 saves.

The Whalers held a 54-12 shot on goal advantage.  Hampton Roads went 2 for 6 on the power play while Potomac was 0 for 7.

Sunday Elite 9-2 WIN


#6 Brendon Zack

On Sunday the Whalers offense continued to hum along as they found the net 9 more times to complete the weekend sweep with a 9-2 win.

Billy Brock and Travis Volmert paced the Whalers offense with 4 points apiece.  Roman Gaudet and Brandon Osmundson each tallied 2 goals and 1 assist while David Min had 1 goal and 2 assists.  Vaden McManus and Colton Seeman each netted 2 helpers on the afternoon while John Horn and Cole Helgemo each scored once and Seamus O’Kane netted 1 helper.  Sean Dickson picked up his league leading 9th win of the season in goal with 12 saves.

The Whalers held a 65-14 shot on goal advantage.  Hampton Roads went 2 for 4 on the power play while Potomac went 1 for 5.

Sunday USP3 12-1 WIN


#23 Ryan Lorenz

On Sunday, the Patriots goaltending was no match for the Whalers offense as the boys in blue and green cruised to a 12-1 shellacking of the Patriots.

8 different Whalers scored goals led by Ryan Lorenz, wo paced the Whalers scoring attack with a hat-trick.  Max Loga potted 2 for the Whalers including a shorthanded marker.  Tanner Davis, Jonah Lainesse, Matthew Hanchon, Gary Eastlack, Cody Wilson, Adam Campbell, and Nolan Cavanagh each netted 1.  Tyler Dienna and Matthew Hanchon had 3 helpers, while Tanner Davis, Jaymen Swygert, and Matthieu Doucet each had 2.  Noah Kramer, Caelan Bolanowski, Adam Campbell, Max, Loga, Nolan Cavanagh, and Charles DuBose each had 1.  Jason Horn picked up back to back wins in net with a 15 save outing.

The Whalers held a 72-16 shot on goal advantage.  Hampton Roads went 5 for 9 on the power play while Potomac was 0 for 8.

For the Whalers, Nolan Cavanagh was ejected.  For Potomac, Chase Ryan, Josh Hampton, and Evan Guidi were ejected.

Forward Roman Gaudet was named Tier3 Junior Hockey Top performer for week 9:

Hampton Roads Whalers Forward Roman Gaudet logged 12 points through 2 weekend games, scoring 7 goals and assisting on 5 others.  The 6'4 220lb Michigan native earned 9 points on October 29th in a Whalers victory over the Potomac Patriots, in a game he registered 5 goals and 4 assists.  Gaudet's 9 points is the most by any Tier 3 player this season in a single game and 5 or more goals in a single game has only been accomplished by four other Tier 3 players. (View single game achievements) Currently on a 3 game points streak, Gaudet has points in 12 of 15 games this season including 9 multi point efforts and two hat tricks.  With 35 points on the season, Gaudet is averaging 2.3 points per game.

Whalers forward Tianyou Zuo will return to the team this week after returning to China to compete with his national team.

After a tough road trip to Atlanta, the Whalers USP3 team has won 5 of their last 6 games and climbed back up the standings from 8th into 5th, trailing Atlanta by only 1 point for 4th for home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

The Whalers Elite team has won 4 in a row and 12 of their last 13 after suffering their only regulation defeat of the season at the hands of the Carolina Eagles.  The team has won 16 of 18 games this season and achieved at least one point in 17 of the 18.
