7-3 WIN vs. Palm Beach


#21 Osmundson

The Whalers Elite team travelled to Boston this week to compete in the USPHL Boston Showcase facing 4 games in 2 days at the showcase and 6 games over 5 days.  The Whalers used a 2nd half surge in game one to take a 7-3 win over the Palm Beach Hawks.

98’ forward Brandon Osmundson set the tone for his team with a 6 point night on 2 goals and 4 assists.  His running mate John Moncovich had 3 goals and 1 assist and Colton Seeman tallied 1 goal and 1 helper.  Travis Volmert tallied the lone goal not scored by the Moncovich, Osmundson, Seeman line.  Billy Brock and Nick Richards each tallied 1 assist.

Zach Alvarado picked up the win in net with 20 saves.  The Whalers held a 27-23 shot on goal advantage.  Hampton Roads went 0 for 2 on the power play, Palm Beach went 1 for 5.

7-4 WIN vs. Tampa Bay


#8 Brock

Game 2 of the weekend would follow a similar script, as the Tampa Bay Juniors hung with the Whalers in the 1st half as the teams play 3-3 hockey after 25 minutes of action.  A 4 goal 2nd half surge would be the difference in a 7-4 win for the Whalers.

John Moncovich tallied 2 goals and 1 assist while Brandon Osmundson potted 1 goal and 2 assists to lead the team.  Seamus O’Kane, Billy Brock, Roman Gaudet, and Arseni Astashevich also scored for the Whalers.  Colton Seeman had 2 assists, Brendon Zack, Billy Brock, Andriy Denyskin, Roman Gaudet, Jordan Shannon, John Horn, and Arseni Astashevich each posted 1. 

Zach Alvarado picked up the win in relief in goal with 15 saves.  Nathan Cleghorn started and surrendered 2 goals on the first 2 shots he faced.  The Whalers held a 25-19 shot on goal advantage.  Hampton Roads went 1 for 5 on the power play, Tamp Bay went 0 for 2.

4-3 Shootout Loss vs. Charlotte


#6 Zack

In game 3 of the weekend the Whalers saw a 2-1 lead at half disappear, as the two teams went scoreless in overtime and the Charlotte Rush escaped with a 4-3 shootout win over the Whalers, handing Hampton Roads their 1st defeat of the young season.

Billy Brock, Colton Seeman, and Zach Zalar posted goals for the Whalers.  John Moncovich and Brandon Osmundson each had 1 assist.

Charlotte won the shootout 1-0 after converting on their 1st attempt.  For the Whalers, Moncovich, Osmundson, and Cole Helgemo were stopped by Rush goalie Jordan Severo in the shootout.

Zach Alvardo made 24 saves in goal in a losing effort.  The Whalers held a 34-27 shot on goal advantage.  Hampton Roads went 1 for 3 on the power play, Charlotte went 0 for 4.

7-2 WIN vs. Atlanta


#11 Seeman

In the final game of the weekend, the Whalers and Atlanta Knights played a close contest, as the game was 2-1 Whalers with under 13 minutes left to play before a late game surge by the Whalers propelled them to a 7-2 win.

Forward Colton Seeman posted a natural hat-trick in the 2nd half.  Billy Brock, Brandon Osmundson, John Moncovich, and Areseni Astashevich each posted 1 goal.  Brandon Osmundson had 3 helpers, Arseni Astashevich posted 2, while Tianyou Zuo, John Moncovich, and Roman Gaudet had 1.

Zach Alvarado pick up up his 3rd win of the weekend a 4th of the season in goal with 18 saves.  The Whalers outshot Atlanta 32-20.  Hampton Roads finished 1 for 3 on the power play while the Knights went 1-5.

The Whalers return home and will prepare to host the 2nd annual USPHL South Hampton Roads Whalers Showcase September 30th-October 3rd at the Chilled Ponds.  The showcase will feature 47 high flying junior hockey games over 4 days featuring 24 teams from Massachusetts to Florida.
