Whalers Steamroll Potomac to Open Season

The Whalers rolled on opening weekend against the Potomac Patriots as the Whalers Elite and USP3 teams combined to outscore Potomac 47-1 and out shoot the Patriots by a combined 277 to 70 in the 4 game weekend series.

USP3 Saturday 11-1 WIN

14 different Whalers recorded at least 1 point and 10 different Whalers tallied multiple points as the Whalers open their Southern Conference title defense with an 11-1 route over the Potomac Patriots.

Newly named Whalers captain Gary Eastlack paced the offense with 3 goals and 1 assist.  Veterans Cody Wilson and Jonah Lainesse each tallied 2 goals while rookies Max Loga, Noah Kramer, Collin Markoski, and Nolan Cavanagh each potted 1 goal.  Rookie forward Matt Hanchon dished out 4 assists, veteran Caelan Bolanowski had 3, Nolan Cavanagh, Max Loga, and Tyler Dienna each had 2, while Jacob Ward, Noah Kramer, Collin Markoski, Jonah Lainesse, Cody Wilson, Adam Campbell, Ryan Lorenz, and Charles DuBose each had 1.

Veteran netminder Everett Yasinski scored his 1st win of the season in net for the Whalers halting 21 of 22 shots.  The Whalers held a 72-22 shot advantage.  The Whalers finished 2 for 3 on the power play while the Patriots went 0 for 2.

Elite Saturday- 10-0 WIN

The defending USPHL Elite Champions started off their repeat bid in dominating fashion on Saturday night with a 10-0 romp over the Patriots.  9 different Whalers found the scoresheet while 6 different Whalers tallied multiple point nights.

Veteran newcomer Vaden McManus set the tone with 2 goals and 2 assists.  Colton Seeman, Cole Helgemo, and captain Billy Brock each netted 2 goals while John Moncovich and Roman Gaudet each had 1.  Gaudet also dished out 2 helpers while Billy Brock, Nick Richards, Colton Seeman, Zach Zalar, John Moncovich, and Brandon Osmundson each had 1.

Reigning USP3 goaltender of the year Zach Alvarado secured his 1st Elite win of the season and a shutout in goal with 18 saves.  The Whalers held a 82-18 shot on goal advantage.  The Whalers went a perfect 3 for 3 on the power play while the Patriots went 0 for 3.

USP3 Sunday 12-0 WIN

11 different Whalers found the back of the scoresheet, including 10 different multi-point scorers as the Whalers picked up where they left off on Saturday with a 12-0 romp over Potomac.

Jordan Shannon paced the offense with 5 points on 2 goals and 3 assists.  Gary Eastlack, Cody Wilson, and Caelan Bolanowski each tallied 2 goals while Tanner Davis, Matthew Hanchon, Max Loga, and Charles DuBose each had 1.  Ryan Lorenz tallied 3 helpers, Collin Markoski, Gary Eastlack, Matthew Hanchon, Caelan Bolanowski, Adam Campbell, and Max Loga each had 2, and Charles DuBose had 1.

Jackson Miller made 8 saves in goal for the win and shutout.  The Whalers held a 71-8 shot on goal advantage.  The Whalers finished 3 for 5 on the power play, Potomac went 0 for 6.

Elite Sunday 14-0 WIN

The Whalers Elite team continued to establish their dominance on Sunday, cruising to a 14-0 win in a chippy affair.  12 different Whalers found the scoresheet while 8 had multi-point nights.

Captain Billy Brock racked up a 6 point night on 2 goals and 4 assists.  John Moncovich and Roman Gaudet each posted hat-tricks, John Horn and Brandon Osmundson each picked up 2 goals while Zach Zalar and Brendon Zack each scored 1.  Veteran Vaden McManus tallied 3 assists, Trent Wydrowski and Colton Seeman each had 2, while Cole Helgemo, Brandon Osmundson, Roman Gaudet, and Seamus O’Kane each had 1.

Nathan Cleghorn secured the win and shutout in net with 22 saves.  The Whalers held a 53-22 shot on goal advantage.  The Whalers went 4 for 9 on the power play while Potomac went 0 for 9.

What's on Tap?

The Whalers Elite (2-0-0) team will load up and head to Boston tomorrow morning for the USPHL South Boston Showcase, while the USP3 (2-0-0) team will take the week off in preparation for the USPHL South Hampton Roads Whalers Showcase September 30th-October 3rd.  The Elite team will play 4 games Tuesday and Wednesday.
