Bantam AA Wins Pepsi Beach Bash

Whalers come back from 3 down to win in shootout!

The Hampton Roads Whalers Bantam AA team kicked off the 2010/2011 season with a Championship in the Pepsi Beach Bash at the Chilled Ponds.

The boys kicked off the tournament with a sloppy performance against the Richmond Rage, dropping the game 8-6.  Jack Herrick took the loss in goal with 19 saves.  Kaleb Willis had a hat trick to go along with 1 assist.  Johnny Babilon 1G, Jonathon Darrow 1G/2A, Regen Cavanagh 1G/1A, Zach McDaniel 3A, Derek Palandro 1A chipped in on offense for the Whalers.

In game 2 against the Johnstown Jets the Whalers came out with a much better effort, dominating the Jets en route to a 7-1 win.  Logan Smith kicked off the scoring at the 12:08 mark of the 1st period from Trevor Neubauer.  Smith returned the favor the Neubauer on the powerplay at the 5:03 mark to put the Whalers up 2-0.  The Jets struck back 19 seconds later to cut the Whaler lead to 2-1.  In the 2nd period the Whalers went back on the attack on the PP when Smith burried his second of the night at 11:59 from Kaleb Willis and Regen Cavanagh.  Cavanagh made it 4-1 Whalers with 2:26 left in the 2nd unassisted.  Caelen Bolanowski added his first of the season at 6:56 of the 3rd unassisted followed by another PP goal at 2:23 when Kaleb Willis converted from Regen Cavanagh and Jonathon Darrow to make it 6-1.  Cavanagh would finish the Whalers scoring attack with :58 ticks left in the game from Zach McDaniel and Logan Smith.  Zach Alvarado picked up the win in net with 18 saves.

The semi finals brought on a rematch against the Johnstown Jets who came out fighting.  Regen Cavangh made it 1-0 Whalers with :57 seconds left in the 1st from Kaleb Willis.  The Jets struck back in the 2nd with two goals at 4:43 and 3:21 from Austin Crespo and Stephan Demarco to take the 2-1 lead.  Cavanagh pick up his second of the night to tie the game unassisted with 1:15 left in the period and then Logan Smith gave the Whalers the 3-2 heading into the 3rd with :27 seconds left from Caelan Bolanowski.  Hampton made it 4-2 at 10:42 of the 3rd with an unassisted tally followed by Regen Cavanagh's hat trick goal from Willis at 3:02 to make it 5-2 Whalers.  Johnstown struck late with 1:04 remaining to cut the lead to 5-3 but the Whalers held on for the win.  Jack Herrick was victorious is net with 16 saves.

In the Finals the Whalers got a shot at redemption with a rematch against the Johnstown Jets.  It didn't start out well for the Whalers, dropping behind 2-0 with Rage goals at 11:47 of the 1st and 9:49 of the 2nd.  Jonathon Darrow struck back for the Whalers with a powerplay goal at 9:04 from Regen Cavanagh to make it 2-1.  The Rage regained the two goal lead at 6:13 to make it 3-1.  Dylan Harris cut the Whalers deficit once again, this time at the 5:34 mark of the 2nd from Logan Smith and Trevor Neubauer.  The pesky Rage team wouldn't go away, striking two more time's 50 seconds apart to make it 5-2 Richmond.  Jonathon Darrow continued his great game, cutting the lead to 5-3 from Logan Smith at 2:47 of the 2nd.  Zach McDaniel cut the lead to one with 54 ticks left in the 2nd from Logan Smith.  Kaleb Willis tied the game in the 3rd at 6:46 unassisted.  The Rage regained the lead a little more than a minute later when when DJ Smith burried his 4th goal of the game to give the Rage a 6-5 advantage.  With 1:52 remaining Kaleb Willis ripped a shot top shelf to knot the game up at 6-6 and send it to overtime.  The two teams battled back and forth through a 3 minute 4 v 4 and 3 minute 3 v 3 overtime session.  The Whalers failed to convert on a PP and the Rage hit 3 posts in the last minute of the 2nd overtime to send the game into a deciding best of 5 shootout.  Regen Cavanagh and Kaleb Willis both converted for the Whalers and Zach Alvarado stopped all 4 Rage attempts en route to a Whalers victory 2-0 in the shootout and 7-6 in the Championship game.  Alvarado made 18 saves is goal for the win and forward Regen Cavanagh picked up tournament MVP Honors with an 11 point weekend on 7 goals and 4 assists.
