Whalers go Winless in Philly Shootout

The Whalers U16 tournament team couldn't get things rolling this past weekend in the Philly Shootout in West Chester, PA as the boys were eliminated in round robin play after a 0-2-1 record.

Game one of the weekend brought on the NJ Habs.  The Habs controlled play from the onset and cruised to a 3-1 victory.  The lone Whaler goal was scored by Nico Degnan from Joey Tarantino at the 4:54 mark of the 3rd period.  Trevor Davis was tremendous in goal for the Whalers, stopping 27 of 30 Habs shots.

Game two saw the boys face the Quakers.  The Whalers dominated the physical play, delivering bone crushing hits to the Quakers but once again the Whalers offense stalled en route to a 3-0 defeat.  The Whalers couldn't stay out of the penalty box, as they were shorthanded for a total of 29 minutes out of the 39 minute game.  The Whalers penalty kill was great, they didn't allow a PP goal, including killing off a 5 minute fighting major to Brian Lewandowski and 2 minute 5 on 3.  Kevin Whitbeck took the loss in goal stopping 40 of 43 Quakers shots.

Game 3 look a lot more promising against the Valley Forge Americans.  The Whalers received the offensive spark they needed after falling behind early 1-0.  Eddie Baylor got it rolling shorthanded with: 35 seconds remaining in the 1st period from Nico Degnan.  In the 2nd stanza Chase Evangelista found the back of the net from Nick Zacker at the 11:30 mark and Joey Tarantino made it 3-1 Whalers with a shorthanded goal unassisted at 3:10.  In the 3rd the wheels fell off the bus for the Whalers as penalty trouble found them once again as they were penalized 6 times in the period and blew a 2 goal lead.  The Americans capitalized at 10:41 and 9:31 to tie the game at 3-3.  Trevor Davis stopped 6 of 7 shots in the 1st period before leaving the game with an ankle injury.  Kevin Whitbeck took the loss, stopping 15 of 17 Americans shots in relief.
