The Hampton Roads Whalers summer U16 team finished round robin play Saturday night and earned a spot in the AA Championship game of the Michigan May Sizzler against the Troy Sting on Sunday. The boys showed determination to rebound from a 4-4 tie to the Livonia Knights and a tough loss to the Golden Horseshoe Nationals 10-0 on Saturday. The Whalers came out flying, punishing the Sting everytime they touched the puck. Jonathon Jones got the team going in the first period when he redirected a pass from Nathan Kanter behind the Sting netminder to make it 1-0 at the 10:42 mark. The Whalers struck again in the 2nd period at 11:26 when Alex Turin was left all alone in front off the net and converted on a nice feed from Chase Evangelista. The rest of the 2nd period saw the Whalers in penalty trouble but the boys killed off 4 straight Sting power plays. The 3rd period was controlled by the Whalers as a relentless forecheck pinned the Sting in their own zone for much of the period. They were finally rewarded with :42 seconds left when Michael Addison ripped a shot high over the glove of the Sting goalie from Nathan Kanter. Kevin Whitbeck posted the win and the shut out in net for the Whalers.
Next up: The team travels to Westchester, PA next weekend for the Philly Shootout.
