U16 AA Represents well in AAA tournament

The Hampton Roads Whalers summer U16AA tournament team took to the ice Friday against top AAA teams from Canada and Michigan, splitting the first 2 games of the Michigan May Sizzler.  The boys from the south showed that they belonged from the drop of the puck in game one as they took on the Ontario Stingrays.  The Whalers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the 1st period on goals by Chase Evangelista assisted by Michael Addison and Eddie Baylor and then it was Timmy Zaremski from Jonathon Jones and Nico Degnan.  In the 2nd period Ontario struck back to tie the game at two with one even strength and one shorthanded goal.  In the 3rd period the Whalers continued to battle.  Roman Degnan netted his first goal shorthanded with a blast from the point assisted by Eddie Baylor to make it 3-2.  Jonathon Jones made it 4-2 Whalers when he connected from Roman Degnan and Nathan Kanter.  Jones then connected with his second of the night, this one shorthanded from Nathan Kanter to seal the Whalers 5-2 win. Trevor Davis picked up the win in net.

In game 2 the Whalers faced a very strong Victory Honda AAA team.  Victory Honda junped out to a 1-0 lead 3 minutes into the game.  The Whalers would knot the game at 1-1 with 5 minutes left in the 1st when Roman Degnan connected back door on a tap-in goal from Jonathon Jones.  In the 2nd period the Whalers faced a serious onslaught on Victory Honda opportunities as the boys found themselves taking to many penalties.  After killing a 5 on 3 Victory Honda power play, VH connected to make it 2-1 at the 8:12 mark of the 2nd.  The Whalers hung tough and with 1:49 to play got a power play chance.  After a quick series of chances, the Whalers couldn't find the back of the net and with goalie Kevin Whitbeck on the bench for the extra attacker, Victory Honda iced the game with an empty netter for the 3-1 win.

The Whalers play two more games Saturday as they take on the Livonia Knights at 9:30am and the Windsor Bulldogs at 3:30pm.
