Whalers Win Pepsi Beach Breakaway!

2009-08-19 Whalers Junior Developmental Programs picks up first tournament title of the new season...

he weekend would begin on Friday when the Whalers faced off with the Prince William Panthers Bantam AA team. In a closely fought contest that saw a total of only 22 shots combined the Whalers grinded out a 2-0 victory. The Whalers struck first in the 2nd period at 8:29 when Ben Trainer set up Alphee’ Herion on a breakaway for the goal. At 8:18 of the 3rd the Whalers would pick up their second goal of the game when Caleb Jimenez netted a goal from Michael Addison. The Whaler defense was stellar in front of net minder Trevor Davis who picked up the victory and his first shut out of the season with 9 saves.

 

On Saturday the Whalers would square off with the Virginia Wild. Once again the boys from Hampton Roads would grind out another hard fought 2-0 win. It was Jonathon Jones who provided the offense for the Whalers as he picked up both goals. First at the 9:53 mark of the 2nd with an unassisted tally, then again in the 3rd with only .35 seconds remaining from Caleb Jimenez and Michael Addison to ice away the game. The Whalers defense again was the story as they out shot the Wild 41-13. Goalie Jack Herrick picked up the win and his first shut out of the season in goal.

 

In the 3rd game of the weekend the Junior Developmental Team would face some familiar faces as the hosted the Whalers Bantam A team who they have been training with all summer. This game would see the JDP take the win 11-1. This game would see 11 different Whalers register points- Isaiah Miles- 3 goals/2 assists, Caleb Jimenez- 1 goal/2 assists, Jordan Byrne- 1 goal/ 2 assists, Jonathon Jones- 1 goal/1 assist, Alphee’ Herion- 2 goals, Trevor Vonu- 1 goal/1 assist, Mitchell Shelton- 1 goal, Ben Trainer- 1 goal, and Joe Hulslander, Timmy Zaremski, and Michael Addison all with 1 assist apiece. Trevor Davis got the win in net with 4 saves.

 

In the finals the Whalers would again face off with the Prince William Panthers. The Whalers offensive machine was out in full force for this game as they handed the Panthers a 7-2 defeat. It started at 12:17 of the 1st when Ben Trainer notched a goal from Alphee’ Herion. Later in the period at 10:45 Trevor Vonu would bang a rebound home from Isaiah Miles. At 7:58 Mitchell Shelton would pick up a marker of his own from Isaiah Miles and Norman Peterson and at 4:43 Trainer would add his second of the night from Caleb Jimenez. In the 2nd the Panthers fought back as they picked up a goal at 7:39. The Whalers would fight back as they picked up two consecutive power play goals to end the period. First at 4:27 Alphee’ Herion put home a rebound from Ben Trainer and Caleb Jimenez then Jimenez redirected a point a shot home from Jordan Byrne. In the 3rd each team would add a goal as Jonathon Jones scored at 9:34 for the Whalers and at 4:45 Joseph Johnson added one for the Panthers. Trevor Davis picked up the win in net for the Whalers with 9 saves.

 

Whalers review….

 

Through the first nine games of the season the Whalers have compiled a record of 6-3 while posting impressive team numbers. They are averaging 1.88 goals against and 4.11 goals for per game. Caleb Jimenez has lead the way with 9 goals and 6 assists for 15 points. Jordan Byrne leads all defenseman in scoring with 1 goal and 5 assists for 6 points. Goaltender Trevor Davis has compiled a record of 4-2 while posting a 2.82 goals against average. Jack Herrick has a 2-1 record while sporting a 3.08 goals against average.

 

Next up for the Whalers they wind down the final 2 weeks of their summer training program with on and off ice practices Tuesday and Thursday as they prepare for the CBHL season.
