"Brandon has made tremendous strides during his two years with the Whalers", stated Owner Patrick Cavanagh. "The challenges placed on him were significant and he had to push himself further than ever before. By doing just that, he has become a two-time Whaler Champion. To say I am proud of him would be an understatement, Saint Johns is fortunate to have him as a player and person-he will excel".

The Hampton Roads Jr. Whalers are proud to announce that 1998 defenseman Brandon Leitz from Savage, MN has committed to playing college hockey in 2019 for the Saint John’s University Johnnies.

Leitz, in his 2nd season with the Whalers, posted 32 points in 49 games on 8 goals and 24 assists, helping the Whalers Premier team win back to back USPHL Premier National Championships. In his 2 year junior career, Leitz played in 82 career games with the blue and green, posting 43 career points.

"Brandon became one of my most reliable defensemen on the ice and even better, was a great offensive threat as well", stated head coach Rod Taylor.  "He came up with big goals in very critical games over the past two seasons for the Whalers Premier team.  He was a key member of our back to back championship run and is really just an all around great guy.  Very proud that Brandon is heading to Saint Johns where I am certain he will make an immediate impact.  I am very proud of him and wish him all the best".

“I first want to thank the Lord for guiding me during the past two years”, stated Leitz. “I want to thank my parents for all the love and support.  Mr. Cavanagh, coach Taylor, and coach Rodriguez have not only made me a better player, but also a better person.  I also can’t thank my teammates enough for all the memories we’ve made.  I wouldn’t be given this opportunity without their support.  I enjoyed my time in Hampton Roads and I have met so many amazing people.  Whaler nation forever!  With that being said, I’m excited that I will be furthering my education and hockey career at Saint John’s University.  I look forward to the experiences and challenges that lie ahead”.

Saint John’s is located in Collegeville, MN and competes in the NCAA’s division 3 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC).

Leitz becomes the Whalers 14th commit of the 2018-19 season and joins Alec Lindberg (Saint Michaels), Brendan Borg (Morrisville State), Chris Ciolek (Worcester State), Blake Bjella (Worcester State), Matthew Hanchon (Southern New Hampshire), Conner Hunt (Manhattanville), Max Loga (Lebanon Valley), Grant Parrish (University of Tampa), Jorai Bart (Lawrence Tech), Cody Wilson (West Virginia), Brandon Osmundson (Utica), John Moncovich (Utica), and Jaxon Rutkowski (Utica) as committed Whalers.
