Hockey 101 - What You Want To Know

For Starters

New to hockey?  Welcome to the fastest sport on Earth. It is also one of the easiest to understand:

  • The game takes place over three periods
    • In the pros and our Junior program, each period is 20 minutes.
    • In youth hockey, periods are shorter & dependent on age group.
  • Six men from each team are on the ice at one time, 5 skaters and 1 goalie.
    •  Substitutions are made every 45 seconds to 1 minute
    • Substitutions can take place "on the fly" while play is in progress or at a stopage in play.
  • A team scores when a player shoots the puck into the opponent's net with his stick.
    • The puck must only cross the goal line, not necessarily hitting the netting.
    • A goal is also scored if the puck is bounced in or knocked in by the goalie.
    • You cannot kick in or hit the puck in with a high stick, skate, or glove.
    • Each goal is worth one point.
    • Players who help set up goals are given an assist, there are up to two assists awarded per goal.
    • Games are usually low-scoring because of both the high skill factor and the physical nature of the game.
  • A victory is worth two points in the league standings, and a loss in overtime or a shootout is worth one point. A loss in regulation time is worth 0 points.
