The Hampton Roads Jr. Whalers are proud to announce that 1998 defenseman Jonah Lainesse (Fenton, MI) has committed to Oakland University’s ACHA D1 team for the 2017-18 season.

The 6’0, 215lbs veteran defenseman tallied 27 points in 48 games this season between the Whalers USP3 and Elite team on 6 goals and 21 assists, while also serving as assistant captain on the USP3 team.

“The time I spent as a Hampton Road Whaler was more than just junior hockey”, stated Lainesse.  “The Whalers have the entire community behind them. From the billets to the coaches I have nothing but positive things to say about the program”.

“I look forward to watching Jonah compete at Oakland over the next 4 years”, stated Whalers head coach Brad Jones.  “His hard work, rugged style of play will fit well at Oakland and he will be a great addition for coach Ronayne and the Grizzles.”

Oakland University is located in Rochester, MI and competes in the ACHA’s GLCHL Conference.  The Grizzles were the 2007 ACHA D1 National Champions along with the 2004 and 2006 ACHA D2 National Champions. Lainesse will join fellow Whaler Cole Helgemo on the OU roster next season.

Lainesse becomes the 9th Whaler to advance his career this season, joining Vaden McManus (Utica College), Liam Walsh (Stevenson University), Brendon Zack (Buffalo State), Travis Volmert (Bryn Athyn), Seamus O'Kane (King's College), Cole Helgemo (Oakland University), Brandon Osmundson (Corpus Christi NAHL), and John Moncovich (Corpus Christi NAHL).
