The Hampton Roads Jr. Whalers are proud to announce our tryout camp for the 2017-2018 Jr. Whalers Elite & Premier Jr. Hockey teams will be held April 28th-30th, 2017 to be held at the Chilled Ponds Ice Sports Complex in Chesapeake, VA.
All prospective players are invited to attend the camp. The Whalers will be looking to build off a very successful 2016-2017 season as the organization continues to be a dominate powerhouse in the junior hockey. The Whalers will field Elite and Premier teams in 2017-2018.
The 2016-17 season was another strong season for the Whalers Elite team, coming off the 2015-16 USPHL championship, the Whalers marched their way back into the title game, before dropping a hard fought 3 game series to the Charlotte Rush. The Whalers finished with an overall record of 50-8-3, which included a 4-1-0 pre-season record, followed by a 37-4-3 regular season mark, and a 9-3 mark in the playoffs highlighted by round 1 and 2 series wins over the Atlanta Knights and Florida Eels en route to the finals in Boston.
The Whalers finished with a league high 264 goals for and surrendered only 84 goals against, the lowest total in the Southern Conference which included the most shutouts in the league at 12. The Whalers special teams units were both among the top in the 27 team league. The power play unit finished the year at 29.9% ranking 2nd while the penalty kill ranked 5th in the league at 85.8%.
The Whalers had winning streaks of 4 Games (Sept. 17-20), 8 games (Sept. 23- Oct 15.) (Feb. 18-Mar. 9), 10 games (Oct. 22-Nov. 14), and 5 games (Dec. 10-17) (Jan. 6-20) (Jan. 28- Feb. 11).
The 2016-17 season was a season of growth and development for the Whalers USP3 team, returning only 4 veterans from last season’s group that won the USP3 Southern Conference Regular season title, USP3 Southern Conference playoff title, and dropped a heartbreaker in last season’s championship game. The Whalers finished with an overall record of 30-19-2-3, which included a 3-2-0 pre-season record, followed by a 25-14-2-3 regular season mark, and a 2-3 run in the playoffs highlighted by round 1 win over the Richmond Generals before the boys bowed out to the Charlotte Rush in round 2.
The Whalers finished with 184 goals for, the 9th best mark in the league, while giving up 111 goals against, ranking 6th fewest among the 27 teams, while posting 6 shutouts. The Whalers special teams units were top 15 units in the USP3 all season long. The power play unit finished the year at 26.5% ranking 4th while the penalty kill ranked 13th at 82.6%.
The Whalers had winning streaks of 3 games (Oct. 15-22) (Jan. 7-20) (Feb. 4-11), and 6 games (Nov. 13-Dec. 10).
