It is with a heavy heart that I share with our Whaler Nation family, Whaler alum Gerald Owen has passed away after a long battle with stage 4 esophageal cancer. In his final season with the Whalers in 2011-12, Owen tallied 48 points in 35 games, helping lead the Whalers to the EJHL South Championship and a birth at the USA Hockey National Championships. Owen was able to compete in 3 seasons with NCAA Becker College, producing 47 points in 68 career games with the Hawks. This week, Gerald was presented his degree, graduating from Becker. Owen, from Chesapeake, VA, grew up a Whaler from youth hockey through juniors. Gerald was ingrained in our hockey community. He was one of the original Whalers to make the inaugural junior team in 2006-07, helping the team win back to back championships in our first two seasons, with a combined record of 78-16-10, and become one of the 1st local products to advance to college hockey when he committed to Becker. Gerald helped mentor many of our young athletes during his time here, giving his time on the ice at learn to play, hockey academy, CPHL skills, and numerous hockey camps. He leaves behind his parents, Chris and Racquel, and many former teammates. Rest easy brother. #HRW #Family #TeamOwen
