Whalers Take 7 of 8 Points Over Richmond

Friday Elite- 5-0 WIN

The Whalers weathered a sluggish start Friday night, and found their legs in the middle frame, taking over the game en route to a 5-0 blanking of the Richmond Generals.

Ryan Bochert, Luke VanSchaack, Domenic Moore, Billy Brock, and Brendan Zack each scored goals for the Whalers.  Travis Volmert, Henry Hearon, Brendan Zack, Tal Finberg, Kyle Perkowski, Domenic Moore, Jayson Dimizio, Cole Helgemo, and Ryan Bochert each tallied one assist.  JT Ketzenberger picked up his 13th win and 1st shutout in the year in goal with an impressive 25 save performance.

The Whalers held a 41-25 shot on goal advantage.  Hampton Roads finished 1 for 5 on the PP, Richmond went 1 for 4.

Friday USP3- 2-0 WIN

Friday night was a tremendous battle between two of the top teams in the USP3 division battling it out for playoff seeding.  The Whalers turned out one of their most complete team games of the season, blanking the Generals 2-0.

John Moncovich and Gary Eastlack tallied the goals for the Whalers.  Austin Boyle, Cody Wilson, Brandon Osmundson, and Peyton Midgette picked up the assists.  Zach Alvarado pitched his 2nd shutout of the season in goal with 24 saves.

The Whalers held a 37-24 shot on goal advantage.  Richmond finished 0 for 3 on the PP while the Whalers went 0 for 5.

Saturday USP3- 6-5 OTL

On Saturday night, the Generals looked to run away with game two of the weekend.  The Whalers turned in a sluggish performance through 40 minutes, trailing 4-1 early in the 2nd period, and 5-3 after 40 minutes.  The Whalers were able to battle back in the 3rd period to tie the game 5-5, but fell in OT 6-5.

John Moncovich had a hat trick for the Whalers, Jared Gale and Caelan Bolanowski each tallied 1 goal.  Peyton Midgette had 3 assists, Brandon Osmundson, Jared Gale, Billy Purdue, and Caelan Bolanowski each had 1.  Zach Alvarado took the loss in net with 37 saves.

Richmond held a 43-32 shot on goal advantage.  The Whalers finished 1 for 4 on the PP, Richmond went 2 for 6.

Saturday Elite- 7-2 WIN

Saturday night the Whalers dominated the shot count, 17-2 in the opening period, but only held a 2-1 after 20 minutes.  The excitement broke out with 4:42 left in the opening period when a line brawl lead to 4 ejections and 64 penalty minutes in the exchange.  From then on the Whalers turned up the offense in a 7-2 route over the Generals, improving to 6-0 on the season against their I-64 rivals.

Domenic Moore tallied 2 goals, Henry Hearon, Billy Brock, Tal Finberg, Jacob Lainesse, and Jacob Dimizio each tallied 1.  Radek Sawicki dished out 5 helpers, Jacob Lainesse and Tal Finberg each had 2, Travis Volmert, Billy Brock, Kyle Perkowski, and John Horn each had 1.  JT Ketzeneberger picked up his 14th win in goal with a relief appearance, making 18 saves on 19 shots.

The Whalers out shot Richmond 44-21.  The Whalers finished 2 for 7 on the PP, Richmond went 0 for 2.  The two teams combined for 118 penalty minutes.  Kyle Perkowski and Sean Tannenbaum were ejected for the Whalers, Zach Pierce and Benoit-Nikola Roy were ejected for Richmond.

With two weeks left in the regular season, the Whalers will play 3 games a week in the next two weeks.  

Things kick off Thursday night at the Chilled Ponds with a match-up against the Potomac Patriots in a make-up game from the DC snow storm.  

On Saturday and Sunday, the Whalers will travel to Richmond, for a weekend set with the Generals at Skate Nation Plus.
