Whalers Elite Sweeps Showcase Weekend, USP3 takes 7 of 8 Points

Whalers Elite builds on Division lead, USP3 takes over at top of standings!!!

Whalers USP3 vs Tampa Bay 6-5 OT loss

The Whalers kicked off the USPHL South Hampton Roads showcase on Thursday night battling their way back from a 2-0 1st half deficit with 4 unanswered goals before seeing their lead slip through their grasp and taking an overtime loss.

John Moncovich (2), Gary Eastlack, Caelan Bolanowski, and Dustin White all found the back of the net.  Bolanowski, White, Eastlack, Adam Choc, James Boisvert, Peyton Midgette, Brandon Osmundson all picked up assists.  Zach Alvarado took the loss in goal, yielding 6 goals on 25 shots.

The Whalers outshot Tampa Bay 30-25.  The Whalers finished 0 for 3 on the PP, Tampa finished 1 for 2.

Whalers Elite vs Tampa Bay 6-1 WIN

The Whalers Elite squad came into the showcase weekend looking to extend their lead atop the division, and did just that, going a perfect 4-0.  The Whalers kicked off the event with a match-up against the Tampa Bay Juniors, which offered little resistance to a dominating Whalers offense en route to a 6-1 win.

Ryan Bochert (2), Jared Gale, Billy Brock, Kyle Perkowski, and Konrad Cwikla all scored for the Whalers.  Jacob Gerson (2), Jayson Dimizio (2), Gale, Radek Sawicki, and Henry Hearon all contributed in the assist department.  JT Ketzenberger scored the win in net with 14 saves.

The Whalers outshot the Juniors 34-15.  Both teams finished 0 for 3 on the PP.

Whalers USP3 vs. Atlanta Knights 1-0 WIN S.O.

Friday night may have been the most exciting, nerve racking game of the weekend for the Whalers, as the two teams exchanged opportunities, but both newly acquired goaltender Jeremy Kurek and Knights netminder Jack Spaulding were the stars, as the two teams went scoreless through 50 minutes and a 5 minute OT before the Whalers prevailed in a shootout.

For the Whalers, John Moncovich and Alex Ouellet scored in the shootout while Adam Hulsey converted for the Knights.

Kurek made 27 saves for the Whalers, Spaulding stopped 25 for Atlanta,  The Whalers did not have a Power Play, the Knights went 0 for 2.

Whalers Elite vs Charlotte Rush 4-0 WIN

The Whalers continued to roll through the showcase Friday night against USPHL newcomers, the Charlotte Rush. The Whalers dominated play, scoring twice in each half on the way to a 4-0 blanking over the Rush.

Billy Brock, Brendan Zack, Kyle Perkowski, and Jacob Gerson all scored for the Whalers.  Jayson Dimizio, Billy Brock, Jacob Lainesse, Radek Sawicki, and Ryan Bochert each contributed assists.  Sean Tannenbaum picked up the shutout in goal with 22 saves.

The Whalers outshot the Rush 37-22.  Hampton Roads ended the game 0 for 3 on the PP, the Rush went 0 for 4.

Whalers USP3 vs. Palm Beach Hawks 4-3 WIN

After 25 minutes of play Saturday morning, things looked dim for the shorthanded Whalers, trailing 3-0 after the 1st half.  The Whalers outshot the Hawks 17-15 in the opening half, despite missing 3 players due to SAT testing, but were unable to crack the Palm Beach defense, as the Hawks netted 3 and chased starter Trevor Hawkes.  In the 2nd half, the Whalers battled their way to 4 straight goals to grind out a 4-3 win.

John Moncovich, Brandon Osmundson, Cody Wilson, and Dustin White each found the scoresheet with goals.  Moncovich, Wilson, Adam Choc, James Boisvert, and Christian Johansen netted assists.  Zach Alvarado secured the win in net with 12 saves in relief.  

The Whalers outshot Palm Beach 43-27, dominating the shot chart.  Hampton Roads finished 0 for 2 on the PP, the Hawks went 1 for 2.  Caelan Bolanowski was ejected from the game for the Whalers.

 

Whalers Elite vs. Potomac Patriots 3-1 WIN

On Saturday morning the Whalers played a familiar but unlikely opponent.  With the pending hurricane preventing the Islanders and Eels from making the event, the Whalers were matched up with their foe in i-95 rival Potomac.  The Whalers carried the play to the Patriots en route to a 3-1 win.

Kyle Perkowski, Jacob Gerson, and Dominic Moore converted goals for the Whalers.  Radek Sawicki (2), Cole Helgemo, Perkowski, Ryan Bochert, and Jacob Lainesse all tallied assists.  JT Ketzenberger picked up his 3rd straight win in his 3rd start with 17 saves.

The Whalers outshot the Patriots 34-18.  Hampton Roads finished 0 for 2 on the PP, Potomac went 1 for 1.

Whalers USP3 vs. Charlotte Rush 4-0 WIN

The Whalers wrapped up the weekend with a huge 2 points and 1st place on the standings on the line.  The Whalers would turn in a dominating performance against the Charlotte Rush, cruising to a 4-0 victory and a spot at the top of the standings.

Peyton Midgette, Brandon Osmundson, and John Moncovich (2) each scored for the Whalers.  Osmundson (2), Caelan Bolanowski, Nick Gimbel, Alex Ouellet, and Billy Purdue each contributed with assists.  Jeremy Kurek picked up his second win and second shutout in goal with 11 saves.

The Whalers outshot the Rush 47-11.  Hampton Roads finished 1 for 4 on the PP, the Rush went 0 for 2.

The Whalers USP3 team finished the weekend with a record of 3-0-1-0, picking up 7 of a possible 8 points.

Whalers Elite vs. Atlanta Knights 6-1 WIN

To wrap up the weekend, the Whalers had a chance to sweep the showcase on home ice, and would face an Atlanta Knights squad who came into the showcase undefeated.  The Knights would suffer their first loss of the season 3-2 in the morning game against the Carolina Eagles while the Whalers took care of business against Potomac.  In the night cap, the Whalers would deal another blow to the Knights with a commanding 6-1 win.

Kyle Perkowski (2), Billy Brock, Dominic Moore, Radek Sawicki, and Jacob Gerson scored goals for the Whalers.  Moore (3), Sawicki (3), Jacob Gerson, Cole Helgemo, Travis Volmert, and Henry Hearon each tallied assists.  Sean Tannenbaum came within 3 seconds of his second straight shutout, which was spoiled by Brendan Ferguson with a late PP goal.  Tannenbaum finished the game with 26 saves.  

The Whalers outshot the Knights 40-27.  Hampton Roads finished 0 for 3 on the PP, Atlanta went 1 for 5.  

With the 4-0-0-0 weekend sweep, the Whalers Elite squad banked 8 more points in the standings, improving to 9-1-0-0 overall and now have a 5 point cushion over the 2nd place Palm Beach Hawks.

What's on Tap?

Both teams will get some well deserved rest after a 6 games in 10 day span entering an off week before taking on the Carolina Eagles at the Ponds October 24th and 25th.

Whalers News and Notes

The Whalers signed 1996 goaltender Jeremy Kurek out of Phoenix, AZ.  The 5'9, 150lb goaltender comes to the Whalers from the Mission Arizona midget program.  Kurek made his Whalers debut this past weekend, posting back to back shutout wins over Atlanta and Charlotte.

The Whalers released 1998 goaltender Mitch Volmert.

Defensman Tim O'Connor will be out 5-6 weeks with an undisclosed lower body injury.

Defensman Seamus O'Kane returned to the Whalers line-up on Saturday after missing the first month of the season with an undisclosed upper body injury sustained during the pre-season.
