Whalers take 3 of 4 in Richmond

The I-64 rivalry between the Hampton Roads Whalers and Richmond Generals showed no rust this weekend after a long off-season.  The two organizations faced off in a hard nosed, hard fought weekend of hockey that featured all 4 games ending with a 1 goal differential, with the Whalers taking 3 of 4 from their in-state rivals, spoiling the Generals home opener.

Saturday USP3- 6 vs. Generals 5

68 combined penalty minutes would tell the story in a emotional game one of the weekend in which the Whalers USP3 team claimed a 6-5 victory.  The two teams exchange 1st period goals, with the Whalers Caelan Bolanowski striking at 14:36 from John Moncovich and Brandon Osmundson, as the teams skated to 1-1 after 20.  In the 2nd period Kyle Prestis would put the Whalers up 2-1 at 4:47 but the Generals would answer right back with goals at 5:06 and 5:41 to take a 3-2 lead.  Then it was Cody Wilson on the PP at 16:58 from Gary Eastlack to tie it back up 3-3.  Richmond would again counter, this time with only :28 ticks left in the period to go up 4-3 into the intermission.  The Whalers would own the final stanza, as John Moncovich would convert on the PP at 2:43 from Peyton Midgette and Alex Ouellet to tie it 4-4 before Caelan Bolanowski converted on his second goal at 10:17 from Osmundson and Moncovich to put the Whalers up 5-4.  Richmond would be awarded a penalty shot at 9:05 and convert to make it 5-5.  Bolanowski would complete the hat trick, tapping home the winner at 12:37 from Osmundson and Moncovich for the 6-5 win. Zach Alvarado scored the win in net with 42 saves.  Shots were 47-42 in favor of Richmond.  The Whalers went 2 for 7 on the PP while the Generals were 0 for 4.

Saturday Elite 5 vs. Generals 4

The battle between the Whalers and Generals Elite teams would look very much like their USP3 counterparts, high scoring, physical, and intense as the battle of I-64 rages on.  On Saturday night, Kyle Perkowski introduced himself into the intense rivalry with a 4 goal outburst to propel the Whalers to victory.  Richmond would connect first at 3:12 before Perkowski got his 1st at 4:56 from Dominic Moore and Brendan Zack.  The Generals would answer quickly at 6:25 and regain the lead, before Perkowski scored numbers 2 and 3 at 11:42 and 16:54 both from Dominic Moore to give the Whalers a 3-2 lead after 20.  In the 2nd period, Richmond would connect 36 seconds in to make it 3-3 before Perkowski scored #4 just 16 seconds later from Moore and Hearon to restore the Whalers lead to 4-3.  Late in the period at 17:55 on the PP, Tim O'Connor would find the back of the net from Radek Sawicki to make it 5-3 Whalers after 40.  The Generals would score the lone goal of the 3rd period at 5:04, but that would not be enough as the Whalers skated away with the 5-4 win.  Sean Tannenbaum picked up the win in goal with 28 saves.  Shots were 32-30 in favor of the Generals.  The Whalers went 1 for 6 on the PP, Richmond was 1 for 4.

Sunday USP3- 4 vs. Generals 5

On Sunday the two teams again would engage in a barn burner, as the Generals dealt the Whalers USP3 team their 1st loss of the season 5-4.  Richmond would land the first two goals of the game at 5:40 and 12:07 to jump up 2-0.  The Whalers woulod get one back late at 19:45 when Moncovich connected from Osmundson and Bolanowski, but would proceed to give it right back, as the Generals connected 11 seconds later to make it 3-1 after 20.  In the 2nd period, Osmundson would cut the lead to 3-2 midway through the stanza unassisted.  In the 3rd, Adam Choc would score his 1st goal as a Whaler at 5:12 from Osmundson to tie things up 3-3.  Moncovich would then give the Whalers a 4-3 lead at 8:23 from Bolanowski on a beautiful shot off a 2 on 1 rush.  The Generals would knot it up on the man advantage at 10:48 with a seeing eye shot from the point, and the two teams would play it 4-4 until the last minute of the game when the Generals sent a dribbler through the Hampton Roads netminder, crushing the Whalers hopes of a sweep.  Zach Alvarado started and made 17 saves, Trevor Hawkes made 29 saves in relief, taking the loss.  Shots favored the Generals 51-30.  The Whalers finished 0 for 1 on the PP while Richmond went 1 for 4.

Sunday Elite 6 vs. Generals 5

Sundays Elite game would feature another barn burner.  The Whalers jumped out of the gate fast and furious, as Konrad Cwikla and Jacob Lainesse converted 1:07 apart to put the Whalers up 2-0, assist went to Dominic Moore, Kyle Perkowski, and Jacob Gerson.  The Generals woke quickly, striking 3 times in a span on 8 minutes to go up 3-2 into the intermission.  In the middle frame, Richmond make it 4-2 at 2:16 before the Whalers rallied back.  Lainesse made it 4-3 at 3:54 from Gerson and Ryan Bochert, then it was Bochert at 4:06 from Lainesse to tie it up at 4 apiece.  With a minute left in the period, Kyle Perkowski would bury on the PP to make it 5-4 Whalers after 40.  In the 3rd, the two teams would exchange goals, as the Generals tied it up 5-5 just 44 seconds into the frame before Brendan Zack scored on the PP at 8:29 to put the Whalers ahead for good 6-5.  Nick Levesque scored the win in goal with 38 saves. Richmond lead in shots 43-35.  The Whalers went 3 for 5 on the PP and the Generals 3 for 6.
