#5 Jacob Toro

The Hampton Roads Jr. Whalers are proud to announce that 5'10, 170lb, 1994 defenseman Jacob Toro has committed to play NCAA hockey for the Becker College Hawks in the fall.

Toro, a San Dimas, CA native, patrolled the blue line for the Whalers Empire team for 2 seasons, notching 58 career points in 54 career games for the Whalers on 14 goals and 44 assists.  The Whalers puck moving defenseman missed all of the 2014-15 season after dealing with a dislocated shoulder during the 2013-14 season that required off-season surgery and an 8 month recovery period.

"I spent two seasons with the Whalers and have always been pushed to do the best I can and they pulled out the player they knew I could be", stated Toro. "I had to miss my last year of juniors due to injury, but the staff stayed in contact with me, especially coach Jones, and they were able to get me an opportunity to play college hockey.  I appreciate everything that the club has done for me and I will always be a Whaler.

"I am proud of Jacob for his work ethic and dedication to work back from an unfortunate injury and get his opportunity at the NCAA level", stated Head Coach Brad Jones.  "Jacob brought it to the rink every day, he made himself and his teammates better, and was a tremendous leader and example of what it means to wear the blue and green.  His patient, puck moving style of play will be a benefit to Coach Hoar and the Hawks program".

Becker College is located in Worcester, MA and competes in the NCAA's D3 ECAC Northeast conference.

Toro becomes the Whalers 8th commitment so far, joining Trevor Voelker (St. Anselm), Tanner Tinoco (Southern Maine) and T.J. Sneath (Oswego), Nate Richards (Stoney Brook), Blake Scott (Liberty University), Craig Boyd (Bryn Athyn College) and Phillip Solari (University of Arkansas).  The Whalers will be announcing a couple more commitments in the next few weeks, stay tuned to www.whalernation.com for more commitment announcements.
