Whalers Dominate Atlanta en Route to Weekend Sweep

Saturday Empire 3-0 WIN

After dropping two tough games to the Potomac Patriots last time out, the Whalers went into the off weekend on a mission in preparation for the Atlanta Knights.  The hard work paid off for the Whalers, as the offense, defense, and goaltending controlled the game on the way to a 3-0 shutout victory in game one of the weekend.

Zach McDaniel got the Whalers on the board with just 1:03 left in the 1st period and then again late in the third to lead the charge for the Whalers.  John Moncovich also converted for the Whalers.  Domen Perosvek (2), Brandon Osmundson, Peyton Midgette, Travis Volmert, and Kyle Newsome provided the assists.  Veteran netminder JT Ketzenberger notched his 1st shutout of the season in net with a 24 save performance.

The Whalers finished 0 for 2 on the man advantage while the Knights went 0 for 1.  The Whalers held the shot on goal advantage 31-24.

Saturday Elite 9-1 WIN

After scoring 10 goals in their last game against Potomac two weeks ago, the Whalers Elite offense showed no signs of slowing down Saturday night, putting a 9 spot on the board on the way to a 9-1 drubbing of the Knights.

USPHL league leading scorer TJ Sneath recorded a hat trick, while Griffin Leach (2), Craig Boyd, Nick Richards, Ryan Webber, and Regen Cavanagh also got in on the goal scoring.  Sneath (3), Webber (2), Leach (2), Jacob Gerson (2), Graham Winship (2), Regen Cavanagh, Dominic Moore, and Tanner Tinoco all recorded assists.  Blake Scott was steady on goal, stopping 19 of 20 shots to pick up the win in net.

The Whalers held a 33-20 shot on goal advantage.  Hampton Roads finished 1 for 2 on the PP while Atlanta went 1 for 4.

Sunday Empire 4-2 WIN

On Sunday, the Whalers would respond after the Knights scored just 2:53 into the game to go up 1-0.  The Whalers rattled off 3 unanswered goals in the 1st period to lead 3-1 after 20.  After a scoreless 2nd period, the Knights and Whalers traded goals 34 seconds apart and the Whalers skated to a 4-2 victory and weekend sweep.

Kyle Newsome scored his first two goals of the season, Anton Nikitin notched a power play tally, and John Moncovich scored for a 3rd game in a row for the Whalers.  Newsome, Moncovich (2). Brandon Osmundson, Jared Gale, Alex Ouellet, and Joe Sauer tallied assists.  Rookie net minder Ian Crosbie picked up the win in goal in his first start of the season.  The 1998 out of Herndon, VA stopped 23 of 25 shots.

The Whalers finished 1 for 7 on the power play while the Knights went 0 for 4.  The Whalers outshot Atlanta 41-25.

Sunday Elite 5-1 WIN

Sunday, the Knights came out a better team, and controlled most of the play through 40 minutes, but a late 3rd period surge lead the charge for the Whalers 5-1 win.

Regen Cavanagh, TJ Sneath, Craig Boyd, Tanner Tinoco, and Jacob Gerson all tallied goals for the Whalers.  Sneath (3), Griffin Leach (2), Oliver Lindstrom (2), Dominic Moore (2), and Ryan Webber all found the assist column.  Blake Scott again picked up the win in net, stopping 30 of 31 shots from the Knights, earning first star of the game honors.

The Whalers outshot Atlanta 34-31.  The Whalers finished 1 for 7 on the PP while Atlanta was 0 for 7. 

Whats on Tap?

The Whalers continue their home stand this weekend as the I-64 rival and USPHL newcomer's, the Richmond Generals come to town Saturday and Sunday November 1st and 2nd.  Trailing the Generals by 2 points in the standings, with two games in hand, the Whalers and Generals will battle it out for 1st place in the USPHL.  The Whalers Empire team will look to ride their two game win streak and seek some revenge on the Generals after dropping 1-0 and 3-0 decisions to Richmond a month ago.
