The Hampton Roads Whalers organization is proud to welcome in Dr. Alexander Aboka as the replacement for Dr. Simpson at Bon Secours inside the Chilled Ponds.  Dr. Aboka will be available for our injury evaluation clinic every Tuesday from 6pm-7pm for all youth and junior players.

Alexander M. Aboka, MD, MPH, is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, arthroscopy and shoulder and knee reconstructive surgery. He holds a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and a master in public health degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health — both in Pittsburgh, Pa. Dr. Aboka is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Association of North America. He speaks English and Spanish.

Dr. Aboka completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. In addition, he completed an orthopaedic sports medicine fellowship at the Cincinnati Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, with advanced training in sports medicine, modern arthroscopy and shoulder and knee reconstructive surgery. He has extensive experience providing sports medicine coverage at a variety of levels. He has worked with several high schools, collegiate soccer, collegiate football (University of New Mexico Lobos), semiprofessional hockey and professional football teams, including time with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Dr. Aboka specializes in orthopaedic sports medicine and musculoskeletal conditions affecting athletes and active individuals of all ages, including children, teens and seniors.  His goal is to help all of his patients with an injury or chronic ailment return to – or maintain – their level of activity. He emphasizes non-operative measures and draws from a full spectrum of conservative measures, including physical therapy, bracing and injections, depending upon each patient’s needs and preferences. Dr. Aboka also works closely with athletic trainers and physical therapists to ensure that each patient has a customized treatment plan that suits their activity level and lifestyle.

When surgical intervention is needed, Dr. Aboka employs a variety of modern, arthroscopic techniques and advanced reconstructive approaches to achieve the best surgical outcomes – and the quickest recovery – possible. He has extensive experience performing surgery for total and partial joint replacement, rotator cuff tears, ACL reconstruction, hip and shoulder arthroscopy, meniscus repair, joint stability and arthritis. He has a special interest in hip arthroscopy procedures (hip labrum tear repairs), reverse total shoulder replacements, arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs and minimally invasive ACL reconstruction surgery.
