#11 Zach McDaniel scores a goal Saturday night against Potomac

The Whalers offense was all over the Patriots this weekend, but ill timed penalties and defensive lapses cost the Whalers as the Patriots took home 6-2 and 3-2 wins.

Leading 2-0 halfway through the game Saturday night, the Patriots capitalized on a Peyton Midgette major penalty, scoring 4 goals in a 5 minute span to pull away for the victory.

Zach McDaniel and Anton Nikitin found the back of the net for the Whalers.  Jared Gale, John Moncovich, Zach McDaniel, and Phoenix Dreer each tallied an assist.  Zach Alvarado took the loss in net with 26 saves.  The Whalers finished 1 for 4 on the PP.  A week after going perfect on the PK in the USPHL Showcase, the Whalers allowed 3 PPG.

Sunday the Whalers and Patriots played another tightly contested game, as goals from John Moncovich and Domen Perovsek lead the Whalers to a 2-2 tie late in the contest.  With only 9 minutes remaining a Patriot found his way behind the Whalers defense and buried the would be game winner.  Moncovich, along with Peyton Midgette, Travis Volmert, and Caelan Bolanowski tallied assists for the Whalers.

JT Ketzenberger took the loss in goal with 19 saves.  The Whalers held a 27-22 shot on goal advantage.  Both teams finished 1 for 4 on the PP.

Defenseman Joe Sauer (Saturday) and Ty Ayers (Sunday) received a call up to the Elite team in place of injured defenseman Oliver Lindstrom.

Cavanagh to Corpus Christi Icerays

The Hampton Roads Whalers are proud to announce that 1997 forward Regen Cavanagh has been called up to the Corpus Christi Icerays of the North American Hockey League.  A Des Moines Bucaneers USHL draft pick, Cavanagh has posted 3 goals and 6 assists for 9 points in 10 games for the Whalers this season including 1 power play goal and 2 power play assists.  Cavanagh will be in the lineup this weekend when the Icerays take on Topeka.

Cavanagh joins forward Ryan Bochert (Johnstown Tomahawks) in the NAHL.  Bochert tallied 1 assist in 2 games with Johnstown this past weekend.

"I'm excited for the opportunity Regen has earned with Corpus Christi", stated Whalers head coach Rod Taylor. "It is our goal in Hampton Roads to give players the opportunity to advance to higher levels, and this is a great opportunity for Regen in the NAHL."
