Elite Splits, Empire Swept

Saturday Empire 1-0 Loss

Saturday night was a battle of goaltending and defense as both teams turned in 31 shots on goal, and the Generals skated away with a 1-0 win after a James Derco goal just 4 minutes into the game from Stian Owens and Steven Ralston.

The Whalers offense failed to convert despite numerous scoring chances.  JT Ketzenberger took the tough loss in goal, turning aside 30 shots.

Derco scored the loan Generals goal, while Garrett McGowan turned aside all 31 Whalers shots for the shutout and win in goal.

The Whalers finished 0 for 5 on the powerplay while the Generals were 0 for 3.

Saturday Elite 5-4 WIN

Saturday night started slow for the boys from Hampton Roads, as Richmond jumped out to a 2-0, then 3-1 lead in the contest before turning up their offensive game late in the 2nd period and through the 3rd to force an overtime and shootout.

For the Whalers TJ Sneath and Griffin Leach each potted two goals apiece.  Sneath also added two assists, and Oliver Lindstrom and Ryan Webber each added one.  IN goal, Taylor Brost took the win with 30 saves on 34 shots, plus stopping 2 of 3 in the shootout.  Dominic Moore and TJ Sneath converted in the shootout for the Whalers.

For Richmond, Riley Biel, Chad Lopez, Mason Corliss, and Jordan Halloway each scored once.  Halloway and Biel added helpers as well. Kien Kemp took the loss in goal with 32 saves, including 1 of 3 in the shootout.  Thomas Loeffelmen scored the lone shootout goal for Richmond.

Penalties marred an otherwise great game, as the Whalers finished 1 for 8 on the powerplay, while Richmond went 1 for 6.

Sunday Empire 3-0 Loss

Sunday morning, the Whalers and Generals continued their defensive battle, as the two teams played scoreless through the first 2 periods.  Despite a quick start, the Whalers were unable to crack the Generals defense, and Steven Ralston broke the tie 1:11 into the 3rd period and the Generals tacked on two late goals to skate away with the 3-0 win.

The Whalers offense continued to sputter, as they failed to score for a second game in a row, despite throwing 24 shots at the Generals net.  JT Ketzenberger stopped 22 shots in goal for the Whalers.

Ralston, Jordan Shannon and James Derco all scored for the Generals, while Ralston also picked up two assists, as did Thomas Loeffelman.  James Derco picked up one helper along with Zach Pierce.  Brian Forness secured the shutout in net for the Generals with 24 saves.

The Whalers went 0 for 4 and the Generals 0 for 9 on the man advantage in a penalty filled affair.

Sunday Elite 4-1 Loss

In Sunday's contest, Richmond would again pounce on the Whalers early in the contest, leading 2-1 after 20 minutes, and this time would make the lead stand en route to a 4-1 victory to split the weekend.

Dominic Moore scored the Whalers lone goal on the powerplay from Oliver Lindstrom and Tanner Tinoco.  Sean Tannenbaum started in goal, and was replaced by Taylor Brost after surrendering 3 goals on 16 shots.  Brost stopped 9 of 10 in relief.

Chad Lopez, Kyle Pollitt, Brian Leonard, and Cameron Durham scored for the Generals.  Leonard also notched two helpers, while Riley Biel, Jack Zielinski, Ryan Gazich, and Stian Owens each contributed one apiece.  Max Barr was a difference maker in net for the Generals, improving to 2-0 on the young season with 37 saves.

The Whalers finished 1 for 7 with the man advantage while the Generals were 0 for 6.
